Tuesday was primary day in Connecticut, Georgia, Minnesota and Colorado.
Connecticut: AP Election Results – Courant.com
Voter turnout for the primary was abysmal. Connecticut Primaries: Voter Turnout Around 20 Percent.
In the Democratic primary for governor, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy defeated 2006 Netroots sensation Ned Lamont (who defeated "Traitor Joe" Lieberman in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate) by a margin of 58% to 42%. "The thrill is gone."
In the Republican primary for governor, former ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley narrowly defeated Lieutenant Governor Michael Fedele 42% to 39%.
In the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, millionaire Linda McMahon of the fake wrestling soap opera WWE defeated two challengers with a plurality of 49% of the vote. She will face Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in the November election.
Georgia: Governor Election Results | ajc.com
In the Republican primary runoff election for governor, Nathan Deal narrowly leads "Palin pick" Karen Handel by 51% to 49%. The race is still too close to call. The winner will face former Democratic governor Roy Barnes (1999-2003) in the general election.
Minnesota: 2010 Election Results (StarTribune.com)
In the Democratic primary for governor, millionaire former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton narrowly leads Margaret Anderson Keliher in a four-way contest 41% to 40%. Dayton is the projected winner, but Keliher has not conceded. Keliher, Minnesota House Speaker, is the first DFL gubernatorial endorsee to lose the primary since 1998.
In the Republican primary for governor, gay-bashing "Tenther" wingnut Tom Emmer easily won a four-way contest. This guy is "Minnesota Loon" Michele Bachmann on steroids. Here's Tom Emmer for ya! Scary stuff!
This being Minnesota, in the Independent Party primary for governor, Tom Horner easily won a five-way contest.
In a congressional race of note, Tarryl Clark easily won her Democratic primary in congressional district 6 to earn the right to take on the "Minnesota Loon" Michele Bachmann in November. Please dear God, answer our prayers.
Colorado: Election 2010 – The Denver Post
In Colorado, voter turnout was a record for a primary election.
The Colorado Republican Party establishment was defeated and embarrassed by the Tea Party in Colorado, giving new life to Democratic chances in November. One commentator last night called it "political malpractice."
In the Republican primary for governor, Tea Party candidate Dan Maes (he of the plagiarism scandal and comments that a Denver bicycle-sharing program could "threaten our personal freedoms" and result in U.S. cities becoming a tool for a United Nations agenda)narrowly defeated former congressman Scott McInnis by a margin of 50.6% to 49.3%. The vote count may finish close enough to trigger an automatic recount under Colorado law.
Complicating matters further, former congressman and anti-immigrant crusader Tom Tancredo has parachuted into the race for governor as a third party candidate. Tancredo called upon the Republican candidates to withdraw. Maes has called upon Tancredo to withdraw.
Colorado political observers say the only plausible option for Republicans would be for the winner of the primary to drop out in the next few days and have the GOP executive committee appoint a replacement. Dave Liniger, the founder of Re/Max, has suddenly catapulted to the top of the list. Maes beats McInnis, to face Hickenlooper, Tancredo – The Denver Post.
Whomever emerges out of this Republican clusterf#%k will face the popular Democratic Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper, in November.
In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Michael Bennet (who was appointed to fill the Senate seat of Ken Salazar) weathered a primary challenge from Andre Romanoff by a margin of 54% t0 46%.
In the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Tea Party candidate Ken Buck ("vote for me because I don't wear high heels") narrowly defeated Jane Norton 51% to 49%. Buck won the support of the Tea Party despite his comment last month calling Tea Party proponents who question President Barack Obama's birth certificate "dumbasses." He got that much right.
Buck may be the first beneficiary of the Citizens United v. FEC decision. Buck defeats Norton in bruising GOP primary for Senate seat – The Denver Post:
Buck was among the lousiest fundraisers among all four Senate candidates, pulling in just $1 million since the spring of 2009.
But Buck was helped by a Virginia-based group called Americans for Job Security, which spent roughly $2 million on ads and mailers in Colorado since last winter, many of which were negative about Norton. The group doesn't have to disclose its donors.
Colorado College professor Bob Loevy called Buck's early help with ads the "nationalization of Colorado election campaigns."
"I think the fact that an outside group came in and targeted the former lieutenant governor in the state so strongly and so negatively is further proof to the extent that Coloradans are losing control of their election campaigns," he said.
There is no discernible pattern to emerge from these primary contests. Colorado appears to be the only wild card, for Republicans, and the results there appear to benefit the Democrats in November.
