TUSD seeks applicants for vacancy on Governing Board

From the Arizona Daily Star, TUSD Governing Board looking for candidates to fill vacant slot:

Applications are being accepted to fill Judy Burns' seat on the TUSD Governing Board. Burns, who served on the board for 11 years, died last week after suffering a heart attack.

Candidates will be interviewed by a community advisory committee, assembled by the Tucson Unified School District. Following the interviews, the panel will make a recommendation to Pima County School Superintendent Linda Arzoumanian, who will appoint her choice to serve through the end of Burns' term, which expires Dec. 31, 2012.

On Tuesday, the TUSD Governing Board will consider the option of recommending up to three names to Arzoumanian, but she is not required to appoint anyone from its list.

Arzoumanian decided to fill the vacancy by appointment rather than calling for a special election after she consulted with TUSD Superintendent John Pedicone.

The appointment process is expected to fill the seat much sooner since a special election couldn't be held until March. Also, an election would cost the district approximately $1 million.

To be considered, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a U.S. citizen and Arizona resident.

• Be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment.

• Be a registered voter in Arizona.

• Be a resident of TUSD for at least one year prior to the date of appointment.

• Must not be a district employee or a spouse of a current district employee.

• Must not be an immediate family member of a current Governing Board member who has shared the same household in the last four years.

Candidate questionnaires can be picked up at the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent, 130 W. Congress St., fourth floor. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Nov. 18.
