The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act S.181 is scheduled for a cloture vote on a motion to proceed in the Senate this Thursday afternoon.
E-mail and call your Republican obstructionist Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain and demand pay equity and fairness for women. Let them know that this is a bright-line litmus test issue for you. If they vote against women, women will vote against them should they run for reelection. Should Kyl and McCain support this filibuster attempt and/or vote against these bills, their actions will not be forgotten nor forgiven.
And while you are at it, demand that your Republican obstructionist Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain also support the SCHIP expansion of children's health insurance coverage passed by the House on Wednesday. This bill will be scheduled for Senate action shortly.
UPDATE 1/16/09: The Senate voted to approve the cloture motion by a vote of 72 – 23 Roll Call Vote. Sen. John McCain got all "mavericky" and voted for cloture. "Sen. Obstruction" Jon Kyl voted against cloture. The measure will begin debate on Friday but no vote is scheduled. Keep those e-mails and phone calls to Kyl and McCain coming.

Equal pay for equal work is a no brainer. I’m sorry you see it as some kind of nefarious social management plot. As for providing health care for children, it is an investment – as is all preventive care – not charity.
Government labor law is an example of using the power of government to attempt to force two parties to do that which both do not agree to. If there are companies that do not “fairly” pay someone (be they female or male) I encourage lobby groups to publicize the fact and encourage companies to change their company policy.
Using government to manage private salary and pay arrangements between employers and employees is a bad idea. Government doesn’t know what fair is, never has and never will.
As for more federal government health care via SCHIP, there are some people who think that using government taxes to pay for medical care is ethical. I do not. If you want to pay for children’s health care, find a good charity and donate to it. Government health care is far more likely to benefit the government health care bureaucracy than improve someone’s health (and it’s going to plunder someone’s paycheck in the meantime).
Is more government the solution? I don’t think so – but your opinion may differ.
