U.S. Senate Unanimously Passes Resolution Calling for Mubarak’s Resignation

In a strong statement of support for anti-government protesters in Egypt, the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan resolution, introduced by two key senators, calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to resign immediately. Senate Passes Resolution Calling for Mubarak's Resignation:

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., and Senate Armed Services ranking member John McCain, R-Ariz., authored the resolution that was passed by unanimous consent Thursday evening.

The resolution calls on Mubarak to immediately begin a peaceful and orderly transition to a democratic political system, including the transfer of power to an “interim caretaker government,” McCain said on the Senate floor tonight.

In addition, the resolution urges the Egyptian military to “demonstrate maximum professionalism and restraint,” and emphasizes the importance to peacefully restore order within the country while allowing for non-violent freedom of expression, McCain added.

A six-page draft copy of the resolution stated that the Senate affirms the U.S. commitment to freedom of assembly, speech, and access to information and calls on all parties to refrain from violence and criminal actions.

It also stated the need for Egyptians to organize independent political parties, and further called on all political movements, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, to support non-violence and the rule of law.
