The Secretary of State reports that with 98.7% of the vote tabulated (Last Updated on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at
12:55:22 AM) that Prop. 100 has passed by 64.1% to 35.9%. It passed by convincing margins in every county except Mojave County (lost) and La Paz County (barely passed). There must be something in that Colorado River water.
Every time Arizona voters have been asked to increase taxes on themselves for public education – and child health care – the voters have always said yes, by substantial margins. They did so again on Tuesday.
The priorities of Arizona's voters are diametrically opposed to the priorities of the Grover Norquist Republicans in the Arizona Legislature who are opposed to any taxes and who are on an ideological jihad to destroy public education and to privatize for profit the education system. This vote is a resounding rejection of the Grover Norquist Republicans.
Prop. 100 will not close the budget deficit. There are still deep cuts to be made to education and other essential services even after the passage of Prop. 100. The "Jan Sham Budget" for FY 2011 is based upon assumptions that voters will approve three measures on the November ballot to repeal voter-approved initiatives and to permit legislators to raid the special funds from these popular voter-approved programs to balance the budget. Vote no. "No bailouts for Republican fiscal incompetence!"
Voters should complete the job by kicking
out every Grover Norquist Republican in November. Arizona deserves a
legislature as good as its people.

Please keep us current on the actual wording of measures on the November ballot. Currently, the First Things First tobacco tax-for kids funds will go to the General Fund with a YES vote.
