A documentary aired last night on AZPM, in partnership with AZ Luminaria and their reporter John Washington, who has been reporting on the Pima County Jail for 3 years. Apparently since 2018, 58 inmate lives have been lost in the Pima County Jail in Tucson, Arizona.
From AZ Luminaria (online): https://azluminaria.org/2025/01/10/watch-death-behind-bars-a-documentary-by-azpm-and-az-luminaria/
“A new investigative documentary delves into deaths in the Pima County jail through interviews with family members who have lost loved ones, public officials and criminal justice experts studying incarceration. It also includes newly released bodycam footage of the brutal reality of what it’s like behind bars.”
The 28-minute documentary by AZPM entitled “Death Behind Bars” in partnership with Arizona Luminaria premiered on PBS, Friday, Jan. 10.

This documentary may explain why current Democrat Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos prevailed over his Republican opponent Heather Lappin by only 481 votes in the General Election of Nov. 2024 (after a recount https://blogforarizona.net/pima-county-sheriff-chris-nanos-certified-as-winner-after-recount/). Nanos was appointed Sheriff in August 2015, elected in Nov. 2020 and again in Nov. 2024. Prior to that the Sheriff was Republican Mark Napier, elected in Nov. 2016 for 4 years.
The inmate deaths discussed on the documentary seem to have been caused by Covid, fentanyl and other drugs, and alleged brutality by the correction officers, and unknown factors as well.
The Pima County Jail is located at 1270 W. Silverlake Rd., more info here:
