Today April 7 at 5 p.m. was the deadline for nomination petition filings for those intending to run for Tucson City Council in Ward 3, 5 and 6.

Sadie Shaw (D), currently on TUSD Governing Board, elected in Nov. 2020 and 2024
Janet Wittenbraker (R), ran for Tucson Mayor in Nov. 2023, Pima County Supervisor in District 3 in Nov. 2024

Fabian Danobeytia (D) – withdrew 4/20/25
Chris Elsner (D)
Jesse Lugo (D), ran for then-LD 10 House in Sept. 2000 in the Dem primary, and for Ward 5 Council in the Dem primary in Sept. 2001

Theresa Riel (D), currently on PCC Governing Board, elected in Nov. 2022
Miranda Schubert (D), ran before for this seat in Dem primary of August 2021

There will likely be Dem primaries in Ward 3, 5 and 6 on August 5, 2025. Then the Dem winners for Wards 3 & 6 will challenge the R nominee in the General election. Ward 5 has no G, L or R candidates running so the Dem primary winner will run unopposed in the General on Nov. 4, 2025.

Ward 5 candidate Fabian Danobeytia has dropped out of Ward 5 race in the August primary. So now it a 3 way Dem race for this open seat. Councilman Fimbres is retiring effective May 1, 2025. The City Council will decide on April 22 how to fill his seat till December 2025.
