Willard ‘Mittens’ Romney a gaffe machine

Under assault from his rivals, Willard "Mittens" Romney had a really bad day on Monday, suffering self-inflicted wounds from his own gaffes.

Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal reported Romney Gets Instant Flak for Saying ‘You Can Fire Them’ – Washington Wire:

There was no mention of “pink slips,” but Mitt Romney on Monday was already trying to counteract the perception that he was out of touch when he said that there were times he feared getting fired.

It’s unclear if he did so.

Toward the end of his address at a Nashua Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Mr. Romney said that individuals should be able to make their own choices about health care. That led to the following remark: “If you don’t like what they do, you can fire them,” he said. “I like being able to fire people that provide services to me. If, you know, someone doesn’t give the good service I need I want to say, ‘You know, I’m going to get someone else to provide that service to me.’”

The ill-timed comment comes a day before the New Hampshire primary as Mr. Romney is taking flack from his opponents who say he “looted” companies during his days at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he helped start.

On Sunday, Mr. Romney told a crowd in Rochester, N.H. , “I know what it’s like to wonder whether you’re going to get fired. A couple of times I wondered if I was going to get a pink slip.”

Outside, the Democratic National Committee passed out small leaflets of pink paper. “Pink Slip: Termination of Candidacy,” they said. Among other things, it says Mr. Romney should be booted from the campaign trail for “lacking core convictions and saying anything to get elected.”

Governor Goodhair Rick Perry lashed into the Romney pink slip line at an event in South Carolina Monday morning, while highlighting two South Carolina companies that Bain shuttered.

“I have no doubt if Romney was worried about pink slips. I’m sure he was worried he’d run out,” Mr. Perry quipped.

Zinger! The Perry campaign also mocked Mittens by releasing a 12-second ring tone of Mittens saying “I like being able to fire people” on the Perry campaign web site (since taken down apparenty; an "Error 404 – Page Not Found" message comes up). www.rickperry.org/the-real-romney-ringtone/. Goodhair was on a roll on Monday.

Romney's attempts to appeal to the proverbial "common man" keep falling flat. His repeated gaffes only reinforce the public's preception of Job-killer Willard "Mittens" Romney and the 1% Economy.

Romney-Gekko will win New Hampshire, but this gaffe machine is doing lasting damage to his own campaign.

UPDATE: The DNC has a new ad today, "You're Fired!"

By the way, keep in mind that the Romney campaign has reserved the right to attribute quotes to President Obama that he didn't even say, so this is fair game by the Romney campaign standard. As Romney said during the debates this past weekend, politics "ain't beanbag."
