Wisconsin senator resorts to ‘dirty hippie’ punching to defame public employees

Why do Republicans hate working people? No, seriously.

I was half listening to this interview (below) on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell last night when my ears perked up and I asked out loud, "What did he just say?"

Wisconsin state senator Glenn Grothman (R-WI) referred to public employees encamped at the state capitol building in Madison as "smelly… slobs."

He later tries to clarify that he meant the "college students who are having a fun party"… or "unemployed people just looking for a place to hang out." Ah, the old "dirty hippie" punching from Vietnam protest days. Is this old chestnut still around?

(The senator's disdain for the poor and unemployed is shared by our Arizona Republican legislators who are trying to stigmatize the poor and unemployed in a series of bills this session).

Sen. Grothman, these people work for a living, they pay their taxes, and they vote. I hope Wisconsites will remember your pathetic ass next November. You can be certain that the public employees and college students whom you despise will.

UPDATE: Just to prove the senator was knowingly lying, here is a video of the Wisconsin State Police who joined the protesters at the state capitol building overnight on Saturday night to prevent the protesters from being cleared from the building on Sunday.
