Fiesta Bowl Scandal: Is the media afraid of “King” Russell Pearce?

AZ BlueMeanie

Posted by AzBlueMeanie: The headlines today say that Senate president says he paid for football tickets and Fiesta Bowl investigation: Senator says he paid for tickets. "King" Russell Pearce says he "never took anything they didn't offer everybody," and the media dutifully reports this classic defendant's denial in its headlines. Only trouble is, the Special Committee's exhaustive investigation (investigators … Read more

Star headline: We have a balanced budget!

David Safier

by David Safier Imagine a headline that reads, "Family no longer in debt." Then you read the story and find out the kids are sick and starving. Do you say, "It's a good thing they stopped buying food and going to the doctors"? I didn't think so. The big front page headline in today's Star … Read more

Pima Dems: No compromise or capitulation on Ethnic Studies

David Safier

by David Safier

The Pima County Democratic Party has restated its support for TUSD's Mexican American Studies program in a Media Release. Not only do the Pima Dems condemn the idea of "capitulation or compromise," they say the program should be "expanded to include more ethnicities and cultures in every school throughout Arizona who want to enhance the academic, personal and social development of their students."

I read this as a clear statement to TUSD Board members and Superintendent John Pedicone not to preemptively weaken the Mexican American Studies program by taking the courses out of the core curriculum and turning them into electives. (See my earlier post on the topic.) As the media release states, "Capitulation and compromise will not deter Horne and Huppenthal's thinly disguised racist attacks on minorities just like Russell Pearce cannot be dissuaded from his attempts to marginalize immigrants and minorities. The only way to defeat bullies is to stand up against them."

You can read the entire Media Release after the jump.

Arizona's proposed 2011 budget is actually immoral. State governments have a few core responsibilities: elementary and higher education, healthcare, and protecting the least affluent and … Read more

Repost: Recall Information

AZ BlueMeanie

Posted by AzBlueMeanie: After a terrible week in Arizona government, a godawful budget and the political corruption exposed by the Fiesta Bowl Scandal Report, I thought you could use a reminder that "yes you can" do something to change your government. The first recall petition was filed in Wisconsin today, and in Ohio they are collecting signatures for … Read more

Michelle Rhee kinda admits there may have been test cheating in D.C.

David Safier

by David Safier Forgive all the "insider baseball" stuff about education, readers, but what goes on in standardized testing, and what goes on with Michelle Rhee, the darling of educational conservatives who has bamboozled lots of progressives into thinking she has "the answer," is important to the future education here and nationwide. And when cheating … Read more
