Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes Discusses 2024 and Her Hopes for 2025

From Attorney General Kris Mayes office.

With another eventful year investigating and prosecuting individuals and groups who are accused of defrauding senior citizens, grifting the taxpayer funded Empowerment Scholarship Account system, jeopardizing the local water supply, and violating the state’s electoral college voting procedures, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes and her team have had a busy year in 2024.

The Attorney General graciously took the time to respond to questions about 2024 and her hopes for 2025.

The questions and her responses are below. Readers need to understand that Ms. Mayes is not able to comment on pending cases before her office.

1) Madam Attorney General, please tell us your overall feelings about being Attorney General after almost two years in office.

Serving as Arizona’s Attorney General is an immense honor. Every day, I’m reminded of the trust Arizonans have placed in me to protect their rights, uphold the rule of law, and ensure justice for everyone in our state.

2) What is a settled legal case you are proudest of seeing through in 2024? Please explain.

Stopping the Kroger-Albertsons merger stands out as significant achievement. It was a fight to protect Arizona consumers, ensure fair competition, and prevent a massive consolidation that would have driven up grocery prices and hurt families across our state. I am proud to have brought this case on behalf of Arizonans. And I am grateful for my fellow attorneys general and outgoing FTC Chair, Lina Khan for partnering with us on this case.

3) What have been the most pleasant surprises of being Attorney General in 2024?

The most pleasant surprises have been the opportunities to collaborate and work with so many dedicated public servants and to see the tangible impact of our office’s work on everyday Arizonans.

4) What have been the most challenging parts of being the Attorney General in 2024?

The most challenging part has been navigating the sheer volume of critical issues—balancing the need to respond quickly while staying focused on long-term priorities like consumer protection, public safety, and protecting our environment.

5) Compared to last year, to what extent are you expecting any pushback from the Legistaure toward your 2025 policy priorities and office goals? Please explain and advise what is at least one way your office would respond to the pushback.

I’m hopeful we can work with the Legislature to advance policies that improve and protect the lives of Arizonans. Whether it’s safeguarding consumers from fraud, effectively utilizing opioid settlement funds to save lives, or collaborating to protect our precious water supplies, there are lots of opportunities to
work together on behalf of Arizonans. And I’ll continue traveling across our state to hear directly from Arizonans about their needs and I’ll use that information to advocate on their behalf. No matter what, we will continue to push back on policies that harm Arizonans.
