Every day, another outrage.
The golfer-in-chief and his minions have been flooding the zone with outrageous announcements, many of which are shot down quickly by the courts or by the court of public opinion. But not all.
Some of them are already having negative effects, some of them deadly. I won’t hypothesize about cause and effect here, at least not specifically. But what we can see, both in others and ourselves, is a strong impulse to check out. Turn away from the ugliness. Focus on more pleasant things.
Stick our heads in the sand.
Escapism is sometimes necessary to survive the onslaught
Some of this is actually healthy. To dwell on the beautiful, the entertaining, the enjoyable, this is not just escapism, it is a key part of survival in difficult times.
But there is a limit. We can’t lose sight of what we must do to oppose the dreadful choices being made by our government, even though this was supported by a dreadful choice made by the voters.
Remember, “there ain’t no sanity clause.”
Please forgive them, for they knew not what they voted for. Even though he told them.
As Charles Blow noted recently, liberals need to get past their schadenfreude and reunite with those who either switched to Trump of stayed out of the fray. Youth and others who ignored the call to resist need our support, not our disdain. Many of them had legitimate concerns, real problems that the liberal order was not addressing. It’s insufficient to note that what is here now is worse. We need to present a serious alternative that can improve not only over the perfidy we now see, but over the insufficient liberal efforts of the past.
Moving forward
And above all, it would be a losing strategy to just emulate the reactionaries in a slightly more benevolent way, or to “obey in advance” as historian Timothy Snyder has warned. We must persist, resist, oppose, and stay sufficiently on point so that we can recover as a society.
We can begin with notifying our representatives, local and national, about our concerns about actions they take or avoid. And there is still time to focus on one or more of the egregiously unqualified cabinet-level appointments.

Tell that to the Dems in congress and the Senate who are saying “we’ll work with anyone”.
Tell that to Obama who shared a laugh with a convicted rapist and felon just last week.
Because it sure AF looks like the Dems went from Republican lite to full Neville Chamberlain months ago.
Years ago. Decades ago.
Nothing personal Nelson, I get it, but this is weak. These fucker’s are rounding up Native Americans for deportation. Goddamit.
MAGA are not sane American’s who will eventually notice that eggs cost MORE and we’re threatening wars after being promised no wars. They’ve gone full NotSee.
We need to be protesting Dems even more than the convicted rapist or they’ll NEVER GET IT.
Apply for a job at your local country club and show up for the interview in your Luigi Mangione t-shirt.
Delete FaceBook/Xitter/Amazon/Goldman Sachs and then take a nice leisurely stroll in front of their HQ’s while carrying a nice sign with Luigi’s face on it.
Stay safe and don’t get hurt but it’s time to have a Blue J6.
I’m typing angry and I’m sick of typing.
Grab a few Plan B’s if you can, they may save someone you love, or a stranger’s life someday very soon.
Find ways large and small to f’ shit up for these billionaire money hoarders.
Don’t write your Dem congressperson, go bang on their office door, then call them liars when when they say “we hear you” because they clearly are f’n lying.
Primary EVERY f’n Dem. It worked for the Tea Party and MAGA, but oh, no, we’re too refined for that.
