Freedom of speech is a given in America, right? Not if you’re Muslim hip-hop poet Amir Sulaiman, who spoke his mind on national television, and then found the FBI on his doorstep. Or groups of protesters at the Democratic and Republican national conventions who were relegated to "free speech" zones far from the politicians with whom they disagreed.

This episode of The ACLU Freedom Files tells the stories of everyday Americans who were exercising their right to free speech and dissent, only to be harassed or arrested.

  1. Out of the blue a letter came from the city of Mesa that I owe sales tax on my ac shop and needed to buy rental tax license which I did. According to phone instructions I paid sales tax on property tax and maintenance and insurance. After I made my first payment a city senior revenue collector, very rude called and said since I owned my own property there was no mortgage and the city doesn’t get enough money and talked missing returns, penalty, levy. I then wrote to the mayor and some other people (a mistake) and they referred me to the head tax collector. She was very nice but when they started to talk tax on fair market value I hired a lawyer. I couldn’t believe you had to pay sales tax on your own property (but I was wrong) the law is cleverly written to charge you sales tax on your own property and I think that is extortion as I built my own shop nights, weekends and holidays over the last 30 years. If I had rent to pay I wouldn’t be in business now. They are talking several thousand dollars back 6 years back phantom sales tax plus penalty and interest and a deadline for a tax levy on my property. How can the city give millions to big corporations and throw the book at me? It will put me out of business. What will happen to my employees? Some that have been with me 25 years. Can you help or am I just out of luck or is there any help out there I just don’t want to give up and pay? Intimidation, where will it end?
