Arizona Democratic Reaction to Today’s State Supreme Court Hearing on Reproductive Freedom

Following the Handmaid’s Tales events in Texas where a pregnant woman, before the Texas Supreme Court ruled against her, had to journey to another state to end her pregnancy for potentially life-saving health reasons and the determination that the unborn child would live only days after birth, the Arizona State Supreme Court heard arguments on the two State abortion laws that are currently both on the books, the draconian pre Civil War-pre Arizona statehood one and the 2021 statute that bans abortion after 15 weeks except when the mother’s life is in danger.

After the arguments before the court, several leading Democrats voiced their views on how the hearing went and what the future may hold, especially if the 1864 law somehow remained in effect.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes issued several posts on social media after speaking to the public on the courthouse steps this afternoon.

They included this:

And this post where the Attorney General said Arizonans, including women and physicians, deserve certainty when it comes to reproductive health and what medical procedures will be sanctioned. She also reaffirmed her commitment to protecting a woman’s reproductive freedom.

Yesterday (December 11, 2023,) the Attorney General condemned the Texas Supreme Court decision, denying a pregnant woman from getting an abortion to protect her life, posting:

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs issued several posts today, maintaining, like Mayes, her support for reproductive freedom. These included:
Phoenix and Tucson Mayors Kate Gallego and Regina Romero, through the Arizona Democratic Party, released a joint statement that relayed:

“Because of Donald Trump’s work to overturn Roe v. Wade, Arizonans have already faced attacks on their reproductive health care and access to abortion from MAGA Republicans. Now, we are bracing ourselves for the possibility of a return to an archaic, near-total abortion ban going into effect that would criminalize doctors and threaten them with jail time. As Trump and MAGA Republicans push to go even further with a nationwide abortion ban, Arizonans won’t forget that Trump is responsible for putting our access to abortion services, bodily autonomy, and health care on the line. Elections have consequences. We continue to grapple with the consequences of the last Trump presidency, we are seeing in real-time the reality of why we cannot afford to let him back in the White House.”

Arizona Congressional District Three Candidate and Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari, warning about the consequences for women in Arizona and potentially across the country if the 1864 law were upheld, posted:

Arizona Congressional District Six Candidate and 2022 Democratic nominee Kirsten Engel, flabbergasted with the Texas decision, also posted:

Democratic Party Chairperson Yolanda Berjano also offered her perspective, stating:

“Make no mistake, Arizona Republicans have been relentless in pushing for this ban that existed before we were even a state. This politically motivated attack from extremists will harm families across Arizona and will disproportionately affect people of color and minorities. While the entire state waits for a decision, the Arizona Democratic Party vehemently condemns these attacks on our constitutional rights. This November, Arizonans will make our outrage heard by electing pro-choice Democrats up and down the ballot who will do what Republicans have not; protect our ability to make our own decisions.”

Because of the recent events on the threat to reproductive freedom, the Biden/Harris Campaign held a press call event earlier today to highlight how the Donald “I killed Roe v Wade” Trump legacy has impacted women across the country.

Biden/Harris Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez commented:

“Last night, a group of judges in Texas told a woman, Kate Cox, that she cannot receive health care that could determine if she lives or dies — this is the reality of Donald Trump’s [abortion] bans. …As Trump proudly brags to this day, it was his Supreme Court picks who provided the deciding votes to overturn Roe v. Wade, allowing Republican extremists across the country to pass draconian bans that are hurting women and threatening doctors. As the chaos and cruelty created by Trump’s work overturning Roe v. Wade continues to worsen all across the country, stories like Kate Cox’s in Texas have become all too common. If Trump or other Republicans running for president get to the White House, they will try to ban abortion nationally and the horrifying and unacceptable reality that women like Kate Cox in Texas are facing could be the reality even in states where abortion is currently legal. President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates in this race who will defend a woman’s right to choose, and that will be on the ballot this upcoming November.”

Biden/Harris Communication Director Michael Tyler stated:

“Long before the fall of Roe, the president and vice president have been warning against the attacks on Americans’ freedoms. … Since Roe was overturned, Americans have made their voices clear: They don’t want their rights and freedoms taken away from them — and yet Trump promises to rule as a dictator on day one so he can force through this unpopular and toxic agenda. So, I want to be very clear: If Trump is reelected, we will face the reality of a nightmare scenario, and that’s a national abortion ban. Donald Trump can’t run away from his record and his abortion legacy. These stories that are coming out of states with abortion bans that he helped make possible are devastating. … and we know more are going to come — and in every single case, we will make sure the American people know that Donald Trump is to blame. … Reelecting President Biden means having a president who will veto a national abortion ban and will fight to restore Roe so that once again, women have the freedom to make their own health care decisions. This is the clear, stark, and life-changing choice Americans will have in November 2024.”
