Arizona Senate Schedule of Committee Hearings 6/8 – 6/12

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The state Legislature will embark Monday on a mad dash to consider hundreds of new laws before the end of the month, including abortion restrictions, looser gun regulations and changes to how local elections work. Burst of activity expected at Capitol

In the [next] three weeks… hundreds of bills they hope to plow thorough include such items as:

• Making city council elections in Tucson nonpartisan, a bill scheduled to be heard in committee Monday. The legislation would mandate all city elections statewide be nonpartisan. As the only remaining city to elect council members by party, only Tucson would be affected.

• Expanding laws against dogfighting to include all animals.

• Requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman could terminate a pregnancy.

• Banning so-called partial-birth abortions. Federal law already does this; a state law would allow county attorneys to enforce the ban.

• Permanently repealing the state property tax, which has been on hold for three years. The tax is set to go back into effect this year. If it did, the state would make an estimated $250 million.

• Requiring presidential candidates who want to be on the ballot in Arizona to prove that they are legal U.S. citizens.

• Prohibiting elected officials from using public dollars to promote themselves.

• Allowing people to keep guns in their cars if they are parked on property were the weapons are banned.

• Trying to get rid of the system that allows candidates for state office to run their campaigns with public dollars.

On Monday the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson, is scheduled to debate seven bills, including the one regarding Tucson elections. Debate time will be limited.
