Beyond Tucson 2019 on Jan. 12

BEYOND IS ABOUT MOVING FORWARD—AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A COMMUNITY.

“What started out as a single day of commemoration has grown to a year-round commitment to public health.

Following the tragic shooting on the morning of January 8, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress On Your Corner,” the Southern Arizona community spontaneously came together to honor, remember, and show solidarity for those that were killed, injured, or traumatized by the event.

As the first anniversary of the tragic day approached, Family members of slain congressional aide Gabe Zimmerman saw an opportunity to not only pay tribute to their son and the other victims, but to provide meaningful activities for community members to reconnect with each other while participating in health-related outdoor activities.

In January of 2012, they launched the inaugural BEYOND event, which included as many as 36 individual events spread across the entire greater Pima County region on a single day—including hikes, fun runs, bike rides, scavenger hunts and outdoor dance opportunities.  The annual tradition has continued each year thereafter.

Since that time, through the growing support and collaboration of its community partners, BEYOND has evolved—literally going “beyond” its initial mission—and has now formed into its own 501c3 organization whose mission is to promote the use of good science and rational analysis to improve individual and community health.

Happy New Year from an improved Blog for Arizona (updated)

Dear readers,

You’ve probably noticed that we’ve been having problems with our comments approving automatically (or not) for a few months. I’ve been approving the legitimate ones when I’m online.  Some spam ones have gotten through the filters, and I’ve been deleting those.  Because we haven’t been able to fix the problem, our webmaster consultant has recommended we migrate to a new Blog for Arizona blogsite, where I have been posting  quite a few upcoming Calendar items.  Also, for some reason a recent Word Press update stopped allowing me to publish them on this current, older website.  Bear with us as we transition shortly.

Here’s a Swearing In event at Pima County Dem HQ for Jan. 3rd, which is on the new blogsite Calendar, but not on this one.  Note below that flyer time has been updated.

Christmas message 2018

As we celebrate Christmas 2018, let us reflect upon the wabi-sabi of life. This is a Japanese term about accepting and celebrating the imperfect and temporariness of life.  From Wikipedia:
“In traditional Japanese aestheticswabi-sabi () is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.[2] The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”.[3] It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching…”
The reason I am urging this concept is that as the years go by, we all age (and physically deteriorate as we become elderly). I feel the impermanence due to the recent deaths of Tucson activists whom I knew along the campaign trail, Claudia Ellquist and Dave Ewoldt, Green Party members who ran (respectively) for Pima County Attorney and  State Senate. It’s hard to believe both are gone, as well as strong Democratic educator Georgia Cole Brousseau, formerly on the PCC Governing Board. Their powerful voices for social justice, education, and the environment will be missed.
