A group founded by the family of slain congressional aide Gabe Zimmerman has announced a list of events that will take place to remember the Jan. 8 Tucson shootings tragedy, as part of a daylong event titled "Beyond: Commemorate, Celebrate, Commit," which will take place on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Zimmerman family unveils events Jan. 7 to promote wellness:
Beyond is the inaugural event for the Tucson Trails Tribute Fund, which was established by Zimmerman's family to support a sense of community through enjoyment of the outdoors, particularly public lands.
Beyond's Jan. 7 events will include:
• The opening will be a Health and Wellness Fair from 7:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Tucson Medical Center, 5301 E. Grant Road.
The fair will begin with a sunrise meditation and interactive music making. There will be activities along a two-mile paved walking/jogging path, a run/walk to the Rillito River Path, blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, Zumba and Jazzercise.
• The main event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Reid Park, 960 S. Randolph Way. Participants can run or walk the Beyond Outdoor Experience Activity course, take a Zumba class or a session with Yoga Oasis or the UnCarved Block Program, and ride Pima County's bicycle obstacle course.
There also will be activities with the Ben's Bells Project, Beads of Courage, Stories that Soar and other groups.
• The closing ceremony will take place from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. at Kino Stadium, 2500 E. Ajo Way. It will include choirs and speakers, along with special LED candles to honor and commemorate the sharing of community and its loss.
There will be dozens of runs, walks, hikes and other activities throughout the day at different locations.
