President Biden, 81, abandoned his bid for re-election and opened the 2024 presidential contest on July 21, 2024. He responded to pressure from his closest allies to drop out of the race amid deep concerns that he was too old and frail to defeat former President Donald J. Trump.
After three weeks of refusals to step aside, Biden finally yielded to a torrent of devastating polls, urgent pleas from Democratic lawmakers and clear signs that donors were no longer willing to pay for him to continue.
Biden’s decision abruptly ended one political crisis that began when the president delivered a calamitous debate performance against Mr. Trump on June 27. But for the Democratic Party, Biden’s withdrawal triggers a second race about whom to replace him with, and specifically whether to rally around Vice President Kamala Harris or kick off a rapid effort to find someone else to be the party’s nominee.
There are only 110 days left until Election Day.
Here’s what to know:
- Staying in office: Biden said he would not resign from the presidency and intends to finish his term even as he leaves it to others to try and defeat Trump. Over the next several months, the president faces the ongoing war in Ukraine and the increasingly desperate efforts to reach a negotiated deal to end the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
- A political first: No sitting American president has dropped out of a race so late in the election cycle. The Democratic National Convention, where Mr. Biden was to have been formally nominated by 3,939 delegates, is scheduled to begin Aug. 19 in Chicago. That leaves less than a month for Democrats to decide who should replace Mr. Biden on the ticket and just under four months for that person to mount a campaign against Mr. Trump.
- Spotlight on Harris: The president’s decision puts the vice president under renewed scrutiny, with some Democrats arguing that she is the only person who can effectively challenge Trump this late in the election. And they say the party will fracture if Democratic leaders are seen as passing over the first Black vice president. However, others argue that the Democratic Party should avoid a coronation, especially given Harris’s political weaknesses over the last three-and-a-half years.
- Age a chief concern: Biden’s re-election bid was brought down by longstanding concerns about his age and whether he remains physically and mentally capable of performing the job. Even before the debate, polls consistently showed that people thought he was too old, and majorities — even of Democrats — wanted someone younger to be president. Biden was born during World War II and was first elected to the Senate in 1972 before two-thirds of today’s Americans were even born. Biden would have been 86 at the end of a second term.
- The debate moment: The White House and aides closest to Biden denied for years that his age was having any impact on his ability to do his job. But the debate with Mr. Trump in late June, which was watched by more than 50 million people, clearly displayed his limitations. He appeared frail, hesitant, confused and diminished and was unable to make the case against Trump, a convicted felon who tried to overturn the last presidential election.

Come on, guys, check out some of the complaints from convicted rapist and felon Donald J Trump, Stephen Miller and a lot more.
They’re saying “The GOP spent money on ads against Joe Biden and now that money is all wasted!”
LOL. OMG LOL so much. What a thing to whine about!
Boohoo!
And Trump is asking for the Dems to reimburse the GOP.
LOL x 1,000,000!
And now how’s too old to be POTUS? There’s only one old man running now. Who’s going to shuffle out onto the stage barely upright?
Who’s losing a step? The former prosecutor? Or the old, out of shape, incoherent dude who gets his own wife’s name wrong?
So many GOP talking points haven’t just been shut down, they’ve been obliterated.
I’m seeing reports that donors who were holding off are now jumping back in with real money, and black women are mobilizing for Harris.
You know, those black women who keep getting props for saving the dems?
And maybe the best part? Convicted rapist and felon Donald J Trump is already making complaints about debating her.
Because he’s scared.
A scared little man. If he backs out of a debate oh noes what will JGCK say?
This is fun stuff, and we need to keep it up for just another 105 days.
FYI, Biden was not yet the candidate, he was the presumptive candidate, so it doesn’t look like the MAGAts can try to keep her off any ballots.
Hooray!
Hopefully, Dems aren’t loading their weapons to restart their circular firing squad. Now is the time to get behind Kamala Harris and kick butt in Nov. Let’s Make Asshats Grovel Again (including state and local MAGAmorons.)
The Democrats appear to be lining up behind VP Harris.
It’s all they can do in the short timeframe. Harris can run on Biden/Harris Administration accomplishments and inherit Biden/Harris campaign funds and infrastructure. Apparently she’s already raised over 50 million in small donations since Biden’s announcement.
No one else can hit the ground running.
In a week, every Goodwill and Salvation Army store in America will be filled with donated F*** Joe Biden shirts.
The author of this article does not see or accept something that MILLION OF AMERICANS see very clearly – that our President is going to have a very, very hard time beating the Orange One.
It’s depressing to read this man’s posts. Perhaps he should flip political sides?
Now we democrats can show our determination and grit. Vote blue.
Trump should drop out. He is as old as dirt. His rambling, nonsensical speeches prove he is senile. He’s a convicted felon. He is skating on other well documented charges only because of gross incompetence by a federal judge he appointed. He lies more than any major candidate in history. He thinks he is pals with some if the worst dictators on the planet. He is disgrace to a formerly rational major political party. He cares not one iota about the average American, except as a sucker that should send him money. He has the policy making analytical skills of a concrete block. Surely the Republican party of Reagan, Ford and Eisenhower can do 100% better.
The horse race obsessed political media will never encourage that. Then they might have to get off their collective butts and put in the hard work they’re supposed to be doing. Also they’re apparently scared sh*tless of being perceived as crossing Maga’s golden idol.
The judge wasn’t incompetent, she was just acting as one of Cheeto’s lackeys.
My guess is that if he gets a second term, he’ll show his gratitude by appointing her to the USSC.
Though I was hoping he’d hang on, the manner in which he’s stepping away shows once again at his core what a class act President Biden is and will always be.
The damage is done. Let’s hope it can be repaired. Hope this makes it into a campaign theme:
