BREAKING: the Supreme Court Has Struck Down Roe V. Wade

The nation’s highest court destroyed reproductive rights by overturning Roe v. Wade in a ruling issued today.

Arizona Attorney General Democratic Candidate Kris Mayes

Kris Mayes, the Democratic candidate for Arizona Attorney General, spoke at an evening Salon sponsored by Democrats of Greater Tucson on June 23, 2022. The program was “Women’s Rights are Under Threat” and the speakers included attorney Dianne Post, Mayes and medical professor Dr. Holly Bullock.

“Today the Supreme court overturned Roe and say that there’s no federal constitutionally protected right to abortion, but then they’re going to kick it back to the states,” Mayes said. However, she said abortion will still be legal in Arizona because of extremely strong privacy language in the state constitution saying, “It states no person shall be disturbed in his private affairs” in Article 2 Section 8.

“Let’s just pause on that for a moment, private affairs, what could be more private than how we what we do with our bodies, right?” Mayes said.

Mayes said adamantly that as Attorney General, she will not enforce anti-abortion laws. “I will fight subpoenas that are issued and I’ll fight in court to quash subpoenas that are issued to doctors, nurses, physicians, assistants, pharmacists, midwives, doulas women related to reproductive services in order t protect their privacy as well.”

“I also plan to establish a crisis legal hotline inside the attorney General’s office so that we can advise women and families who are the subject of legal harassment by law enforcement agencies seeking to prosecute them and provide information about their digital privacy and also provide information about nonprofits that are assisting women in counties where access to reproductive care and abortion is being disrupted.”

Equal Rights Amendment

The full text of the Equal Rights Amendment:

Section 1: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Section 2: The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3: This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Attorney and reproductive rights advocate Dianne Post.

Activist and attorney Dianne Post urged Democrats to call their US Senators and Congressmen to approve H.J.Res.17, and the matching Senate bill S.J.Res.1, both of which remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The requisite 38 states have ratified the ERA as of January 27, 2020, however, the deadline for ratification was June 30, 1982 deadline.

Legal scholars say that including the ERA in the Constitution as the 28th Amendment will make anti-abortion laws unenforceable.

“Every single amendment that has expanded constitutional rights to vulnerable groups has been attacked. Every one has been attacked. So we expected that it would be attacked,” Post said.

Self-managing abortions

Dr. Holly Bullock said many women are self-managing abortions outside the healthcare system. She is a obstetrician and gynecologist in Tucson, and teaches medical students at the University of Arizona.

She said, “We’re awaiting the Supreme Court decision to come down. People were crying because they know what they need to do, the decision that they are making for themselves and their families and just not knowing. Our contingency plan is to help people get to California where we have our affiliate in Southern California (where abortion is legal).”

Holly Bullock, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Clerkship Assistant Director, University of Arizona

Dr. Bullock added, “40% of abortions even now are medication abortions and people can get medications outside the healthcare system. They can get abortion pills through the mail. People can even get one of the medications just over the counter in Mexico. And so as things change, we truly anticihttps://thedgt.org/pate that abortion access in half of the country is going to be curtailed and that’ll affect Arizona as well, but that we’re going to see people self-managing abortions outside of the healthcare system.”

“This is safe. I’m providing people resources so that they can access this and then know when to seek out help. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working with my OB-GYN colleagues to train our urgent care colleagues and our emergency department colleagues to know that after an abortion is the same thing as a miscarriage.”

She called on Democrats to make donations to the Tucson Abortion Support Collective. “This is a mutual aid society that has made up of our community members that are taking care of our community members. If you want to donate, give even just a dollar to this group,” she said. “This group helps people with transportation to clinics helps even with translation services. If it’s not something that we have on hand, they’ve even babysat some of my patient’s children while my patient went to go get an abortion procedure they’ve helped with pregnancy tests, they help with emergency contraception and they’ve helped people get out of state.

  1. “I agree. Except with the Dems have no balls. I’m speaking as one who reaches out to voters in person, at their front door. We also kick butt on social media, texts and social media.”

Larry, I feel compelled to respond to your “balls” comment. First, thank you for your service. But with all due respect, reaching out to voters and kicking butt on social media etc…does not take balls. It takes commitment, stamina, determination, and intelligence but does not take balls. Little old ladies can do those things.

Have you seen the 2012 film “Lincoln,” the story of how the 13th amendment to the Constitution was passed? Most likely you have so we can use that as kind of a benchmark for a politician having balls.

Arguably, passing the Affordable Care Act took balls and I’ll give Obama and the Democrats credit for that.

But that’s about it for the 21st century.

Tell me, who in the Biden Administration has balls? Biden has had most of his agenda tanked by a crazy little b!tch from AZ and a hillbilly coal baron from WV, members of his own party.

Oh, but what can be done? This is a Democratic mantra chanted while they wring their hands.

I know that the AZ Dems slapped Sinema’s pudgy little hand with a censure that she laughed off.

The answer according to Democrats is to vote for more Democrats.

I, for one, would like to see some power moves and I think a lot of folks are coming around to that way of thinking.

Oral contraceptives should be over the counter like they are in over 100 other countries. I will die on this hill.

  3. Guns are important enough to be ruled by a national federal standard with which the states cannot interfere.

Women are not. Alito logic. Impeach the liars.

  4. I agree. Except with the Dems have no balls. I’m speaking as one who reaches out to voters in person, at their front door. We also kick butt on social media, texts and social media. I recommend you put your action where your mouth is. Look up your legislative district, and volunteer TODAY!

    • Agree 100% we need to get involved, there are good Dems, but I stand by the no balls comment.

And recent history is on my side.

The far right minority demanded the GOP follow them and turned them into the GQP.

Dems do the opposite, they run away from anything that may get them called out on Fox News.

      For example:

In 2010, the ACA. They should have ran on its benefits.

Gun grabbing. Just say it. No more liquified children.

The defense budget is wasteful, fiscally insane, and we’re halving it.

      Single payer healthcare.

      Taxing their rich donors.

Closing GITMO and Putting Cheney and Bush on trial for war crimes.

The far right has set the standard for getting things done.

The proof is in the headlines this week.

So I’m going to do what the Tea Party did and MAGA are doing.

I’m going to say f’ yeah I’m coming for your guns, rich people are going to pay taxes, defense contractors are just going to have to do without a bigger yacht this year because we’re passing single payer healthcare.

      We’re passing the f’ ERA.

We’re passing FDR’s Second Bill of Rights.

And then I’ll show myself out after I’m shouted down for being too radical.

The far right minority is winning because they’re loud and don’t back down and it’s getting people hurt and killed.

Dems are always too scared to lose a battle even if it means winning the war.

      • There are two things Dems can do right to fix America.

End the filibuster and pack the SCOTUS.

        Sinema/Manchin won’t end the filibuster.

        Biden won’t pack the court.

Sinema will never go against her sugar daddies.

But I think Biden could be swayed with enough public pressure.

Right now, pressing Biden seems like the soonest best hope.

But packing the court and rocking that boat prior to an election?

        Would the Dems do that?

        With sorrow…

        • Wholeheartedly agree Sharpie. I would add replacing “go along to get along” Schumer as Senate Democratic Party Leader with the fighter we need. Someone who has said “…wants to see blood and teeth on the floor”. The good Senator Professor.

          • Dems need to ask themselves, what would Mitch do?

And then do that right then and there and not apologize.

    • And Hey, Larry Bodine, thanks for all you do, my frustration is directed elsewhere, not at this blog and the writers.

      Tom

  5. Well, they had to end Roe. What good are all the guns if there’s no one to shoot?

End the filibuster, pack the court, pass nationwide laws giving women control over their own bodies and to get guns off the street.

Oh, wait, can’t do that because Manchin and Sinema are still raking in money from Republican donors.

Impeach Thomas for his conflicts of interest. The R’s would do it if he was liberal.

Impeach Kavanagh, Barret, and Gorsuch, for lying (and crying) in their job interviews. The R’s would do it if they were liberal.

In a year or two the impacts from this weeks rulings will start to be known, it will be more gun deaths and more impoverished children, which the lying liars in the GQP will blame on Biden.

Oh, and before we get all the endless editorials about how this is all old white men wanting power, remember that about 50% of white women voted for T4ump.

    This is a religion problem.

And a Dems got no balls problem.
