Petitions with nominating signatures are due 5 p.m. on July 11, 2022, so stay tuned to see who will be running in the General Election of Nov. 8, 2022. These are non-partisan, unpaid positions.

Carolyn’s notes: For the 2 open seats on TUSD — (members Adelita Grijalva & Leila Counts are stepping down).

Jennifer Eckstrom is the former Chief of Staff for then District 2 Pima County Supervisor Ramon Valadez (Democrat) and was also Mayor of South Tucson. She is the daughter of former District 2 Pima County Supervisor Dan Eckstrom (Democrat).

Val Romero is the Independent who ran against Democrat Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik in Nov. 2021 ; Luis A. Gonzales served one term on the PCC Governing Bd. and is a former State Senator; and Karla Morales was Director of Multicultural Advancement at UA till recently, and is now VP at Arizona Technology Council. UPDATE: Karla has withdrawn her interest.

In Sunnyside School District, incumbent Consuelo Hernandez is also running for new LD 21 House, for one of 2 House seats, one being vacated by her brother LD 2 Rep. Daniel Hernandez Jr.(running for CD 2 in Congress).  Her brother also served in both seats at one time. Her other sister is Alma Hernandez, current LD 3 House Rep. (also running for re-election in new LD 20).

In Amphi School District, incumbent Matt Kopec, former LD 9 House legislator and aide to the Ward 3 Council office is running for re-election.

  1. UPDATE: Some of these school bd. candidates have already filed their nomination petitions: http://www.schools.pima.gov/elections/2022-filed-candidates. I’ve updated this post, and will try to do so along the way, pending time available of course. Some candidates will not be able to gather enough signatures to meet the filing deadline, and some have already withdrawn.
Filing period ends July 11, so if you want to check on who’s running, refer to that website link. And the race is on…

  2. Added more names for Ajo, Flowing Wells, Sunnyside, Tucson Unified and Vail school district. Lots of interest in these education positions in 2022. 11 people running for 2 seats in Vail, which indicates a lot of interest in these seats.

  3. Just added another candidate to the TUSD Governing Bd. race – Rebecca Zapien, a political newcomer as far as I know, along with Brieanna E. Chillious. Hopefully some group (LWVGT?) or neighborhood assn. will be a forum of these 6 TUSD candidates seeking the 2 open seats.

  4. Aloha Carolyn, I hope your doing awesome. We appreciate the work you are doing. I just need to make a correction to your article. Val Romero is not a Republican, I know this because, I am Val Romero, and I ran on the City Council ballot as an (I). I have been Registered Independent for multiple years, I believe, I left the Democrat party in 2001 to become Independent. I would appreciate an edit to your article. Mahalo in advance. Val Romero

    • Val, I sincerely apologize for listing you as a R. I should have checked as I was covering that City Council race, but forgot that you were an Independent. Thanks for correcting me and I have updated the blogsite. Glad you saw the article and contacted me.

    • You bet. Though the list isn’t complete or finalized, it gives the readers a chance to know who’s running. I will report again after the filing deadline of July 11. Filing period for nomination petitions starts June 13. Another name was added to the Ajo School Bd. list of candidates this morning, so I updated the list.
