Each election year the Capitol Times hosts a Meet the Candidates event in July for all Legislative candidates and incumbents at a fancy downtown Phoenix hotel.
This year, the Cap Times event — sponsored by the Citizens Clean Elections Commission — is virtual and spread out over five evenings, from 6-8 p.m. each night. The schedule is below. All of the forums are broadcast live on YouTube and posted on YouTube immediate afterward.
Pima County LDs 2 and 3 were on July 13, and Pima County LDs 9,10, and 11 were on July 14. The videos for those two events are posted below.
There are a ton of contested primaries in the Legislature on both sides of the aisle. Our forum on Tuesday was very interesting; our Republican challenger was one of the men who were no-shows. The format is that each Legislative District is up, one at a time. Each candidate for each district gets a minute or two to introduce themselves, but the majority of the time is fielding questions from the audience.
- July 13 (LDs 1,2,3,4,5,6)
- July 14 (LDs 7,8,9,10,11,12)
- July 15 (LDs 13,14,15,16,17,18)
- July 16 (LDs 19,20,21,22,23,24)
- July 17 (LDs 25,26,27,28,29,30)
Being virtual, this event is open to more out-of-Phoenix voters and candidates, that the hotel events of past years.
Being virtual, this event is open to more out-of-Phoenix voters and candidates, that the hotel events of past years. It’s too bad that several Democrats and Republicans chose not to participate; there are also quite a few men who are not participating in these forums.
I urge you to check out these videos. People in LD9 often ask me which other candidates should they support. Check out the women running in LD6 — Mayor Cora Evans and Felicia French — as they run rings around Rep. Walt Blackman. It’s too bad NONE of the men running for office in LD11 joined Linda Patterson and JoAnna Mendoza in the forum, none of the Republican incumbents showed up to debate Sharon Girard in LD8, and former House Majority Leader Warren Petersen didn’t show up to debate Lynsey Robinson, who is running for the Senate in LD12. (Whoa. I have heard these other women speak before. This was the first time I have heard Robinson. She was great! What a breath of fresh air for LD12.)
I thought it was worthwhile and well-run by Cap Times editor Luige del Puerto and Lisa Simpson. The technology was complex, but it worked perfectly!
