Tea-Publican Tyranny in Michigan Update: Death of Democracy in Detroit

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Last year, the voters of Michigan repealed the state's anti-democratic "financial martial law" statute by a citizens referendum. Under that law, the governor was empowered to declare a "financial emergency" as a means to literally dismiss the duly elected government of a county, city, town, school district, etc., and to appoint an unelected fiancial manager with unlimited powers, answerable to one but the governor.

Tyrannical Tea-Publicans in the Michigan legislature were not going to let Michigan voters tell them what to do, nosiree. Ignoring the will of the voters, during a lame-duck session after the election they quickly passed a new "financial martial law" statute to replace the one the voters has voided, and this time did it in a way that it is not subject to a voter referendum. It was a big "f#%k you!" to Michigan voters.

Now those tyrannical Tea-Publicans have their eyes on the prize: the 18th-largest city in the United States, Detroit. Tea-Publican Gov. Rick Snyder said on Friday he will appoint an emergency financial manager for Detroit. Snyder to name Detroit emergency financial manager, has candidate in mind :

Gov. Rick Snyder today pulled the trigger and announced he will
appoint an emergency financial manager for the state’s largest city.
Snyder said he has a top candidate in mind, and that person would be in
charge for 18 months.

Chief Justice John Roberts uses phony statistics

Much has been written about the coded racism in Justice Antonin Scalia's line of questioning ("racial entitlement") regarding the Voting Rights Act, and his novel theory of judicial activism: "Congress is incapable of legislating so the Court will."

But Chief Justice John Roberts could barely hide his disdain for the Voting Rights Act as well. If you listen to the audio of the oral arguments, you can tell that Chief Justice Roberts just thought he was oh so clever (with a satisfied smirk). Too bad he was full of crap.

But Steve Benen writes in Massachusetts 1, John Roberts 0:

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has long opposed
the Voting Rights Act
, so it didn't surprise anyone when he was
outwardly hostile towards the law during oral arguments this week.
Indeed, the jurist seemed well prepared with talking points he delivered
with great authority.

"Do you know which state has the worst
ratio of white voter turnout to African-American voter turnout?" Roberts
asked Solicitor General Don Verrilli. When Verrilli said he did not
know, Roberts answered the question for him: "Massachusetts." Moments
later, the chief justice did it again, asking, "Which state has the
greatest disparity in registration between white and
African American?" Again the solicitor general did not know, and again Roberts said, "Massachusetts."

James Carter took a closer look
at the latest information on voting and registration from the U.S.
Census Bureau and found that Roberts appeared to be completely wrong.
What's more, the Boston Globe talked to
Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, who's eager to explain
just how mistaken the conservative justice is. "I'm calling him out,"

Galvin said.

100th anniversary of Washington’s Women’s Suffrage Parade on Sunday

The 100th anniversary of Washington’s Women’s Suffrage Parade is on Sunday, in Washington, D.C. 100 years after suffrage march, activists walk in tradition of Inez Milholland:

At the 100th anniversary of Washington’s Women’s Suffrage Parade on Sunday, participants will march in the bold tradition of suffragette Inez Milholland — even if they, and most of America, have never heard of her. Of all the images and people invoked during this centennial celebration, perhaps the least remembered is the one woman said to have died for the cause.

Milholland, 27, sitting astride a white horse, in white, flowing, Joan of Arc robes is the most iconic image of that 1913 march. When she died three years later, she was hailed as a martyr of the women’s suffrage movement. That she is barely remembered today is part of the challenge and frustration for those who advocate for greater attention to women’s history and for those trying to build a national women’s history museum on the Mall.

Milholland
Library of Congress – A memorable image from the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Parade was that of Inez Milholland astride a white horse amid the 5,000 marchers.

The march, sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta sorority and including the National Women’s History Museum, the Sewall-Belmont House Museum and the National Organization for Women, retraces the original 5,000-person march down Pennsylvania Avenue. It will feature women in period costumes and focus broadly on women’s equality.
