Congressman John Shadegg's retirement has the wannabe Congress critters crawling out of the woodwork. Already Rep. Sam Crump, who had been exploring a run for Attorney General, and Sen. James Waring, who had been exploring a run for State Treasurer, have announced they will run for Congress.
On Monday, Sen. Pamela Gorman announced she would run for Congress. Gorman to run for Congress Gorman is the third Arizona lawmaker who has decided to run for the seat that will be left vacant by U.S. Rep. John Shadegg.
Chris Baker, Gorman’s political consultant, said a decision will be coming “within a week or so,” regarding whether Gorman will keep her seat in the Legislature while running for Congress.
Also considering joining the race is Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker who has been running for governor, but not gaining much traction in opinion polls. 1 from GOP may skip governor's race:
Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker said Monday he is considering dropping his bid to oust incumbent Jan Brewer in the GOP primary in favor of running for Congress.
In a prepared statement, Parker said the announcement by Congressman John Shadegg that he would not seek re-election created an alternate opportunity. Parker declined an to elaborate in person, but had a press aide speak for him.
[In his prepared statement Monday, Parker said he will make a decision within 48 hours after "listening and considering."]
The congressional race could prove equally crowded, with three state legislators — Sens. Jim Waring of Phoenix and Pamela Gorman of Anthem and Rep. Sam Crump, also of Anthem — already staking out their turf.
Parker has been back in single digits, along with former Board of Regents President John Munger and Paulden business owner Owen Buz Mills.
Crump, Waring and Gorman have been leaders in the worst failed Arizona Legislature in history. It takes some serious delusion to tell yourself that you deserve a promotion to Congress. I think not.
Phoenix businessman Jon Hulburd is the only announced Democrat for the seat in the Republican-leaning district. Hulburd for Congress
