Christopher Hayes: Gadhafi, McCain and a WikiLeak cable

Politico reported on Friday that a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable shows that Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain promised to help Libyan dictator Muammar Qadhafi obtain U.S. military hardware in 2009. Leaked cable: John McCain pushed to arm Qadhafi - POLITICO.com:

The cable, released by the open information group WikiLeaks, reveals the pledge came at meeting that was attended by other prominent members of Congress, including Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

The cable indicates that McCain was the dominant voice among the congressional delegation in a push for military hardware for Qadhafi.

“Sen. McCain assured Muatassim that the United States wanted to provide Libya with the equipment it needs for its … security,” according to the cable.

Other details in the leaked diplomatic cable may embarrass McCain given the fall of the Qadhafi regime.

McCain struck a distinctly different tone this week, telling Fox’s Greta van Susteren that “he [Muammar Qadhafi] has the blood of Americans on his hands as a result of Pan Am 103. He is a person who over time would — if he were able to succeed — would clearly train terrorists and export terrorism.”

No one has done more harm to the reputation of the United States than the Neocon Three Stooges: John McCain and his BFF's Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman. They should suffer the ignomy of living the rest of their lives in disgrace.

Christopher Hayes of The Nation magazine, sitting in for Lawrence O'Donnell on The Last Word on Friday night, delivered a stinging commentary on the hypocrisy of Neocon warmonger John McCain.

"John McCain understands in his private contact that the cartoon of heroes and villains clashing in this picture of foreign policy that is all about the moral blackmail of your opponents is false. Because like Donald Rumsfeld before him, shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, here McCain is, across the table, politely listening to the pleas for more money and military supplies from the same regime that he's calling bloodthirsty. But it's politically expedient for John McCain to go out in the world and pretend he doesn't know that. John McCain is a bully against anyone who refuses to buy into his cartoonish moral crusading. But low and behold, behind closed doors, he's operating just like everyone else."
