Cinema La Placita in 15th year



Cinema La Placita CELEBRATES 15 YEARS of showing classic movies outdoors in Tucson! The 2014 season will begin Thursday, May 8 and conclude Thursday, August 28.

The Cinema La Placita outdoor film series began with a grant from the City of Tucson in 2000 and has screened over 375 movies in downtown Tucson. Many changes have come and gone and come again to downtown since Cinema La Placita projected its first film in May 2000.

Incidentally, the audience and online voters voted for this schedule of Hitchcock films. The schedule that WASN’T chosen was a schedule of films directed by Billy Wilder.

$3 per person includes popcorn for these events:

June 5 The 39 Steps (1935) NR Starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 

June 12 Notorious (1946) NR Starring Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and Claude Raines. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

June 19 Rear Window (1954) NR Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly and Raymond Burr. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

June 26 Dial M for Murder (1954) NR Starring Ray Milland and Grace Kelly. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

They also have been  hosting FREE kid-friendly movies for 2nd Saturday Downtown for 4 years now in various venues downtown. Their newest location is at the Historic Train depot, 414 E. Toole next to the Southern AZ Transportation Museum.  Check the 2nd Saturdays Downtown website for updated listings of the movies each month.  The next 2nd Saturday Downtown event is on June 14 and they will be showing “The Lorax” at 7:15 p.m.

Carolyn Sugiyama Classen, a life long Democrat, was born & raised in the State of Hawaii, was a Legislative Aide for U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye on Capitol Hill, and practiced law for a while. In Tucson she worked as a tribal staff attorney for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and later was the Interim Executive Director of the now defunct Domestic Violence Commission. In 2008 she became a “My Tucson” guest columnist for the Tucson Citizen newspaper, then continued blogging for for over four and a half years. Her blogsite was entitled “Carolyn’s Community” about community events and some political news, until Gannett Publishing shut down the site on January 31, 2014. She started with Blog for Arizona on Feb. 11, 2014. Part time she has been sitting as a Hearing Officer in Pima County Consolidated Justice Courts Small Claims Division since April, 2005. She is married to University of Arizona Distinguished Professor Albrecht Classen, a native of Germany. They have one son, who lives in Seattle, WA with his wife and daughter. She is also the Editor of the Southern Arizona Japanese Cultural Coalition website, (since Jan. 2013).
