Trump has cruelly forced tens of thousands of already-approved refugees to be stranded in dangerous conditions overseas. Only a very small number of refugees are now being resettled and allowed to access Reception and Placement support under exceptions to the refugee ban.
Who is a refugee? The US State Department selects refugees for resettlement through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. They are not undocumented border crossers who arrive in the United States on their own.
Tucsonans can safely fight against Trump’s hatred on Saturday, June 28, which is World Refugee Day Celebration in Tucson.
Among the sponsors is Tucson’s own Iskashitaa Refugee Network. I’m a volunteer with Iskashitaa, and we’ll celebrate World Refugee Day with fun and engaging activities for all to participate in, including:
Performances by:
- TUSD Students
- Tucson African Music
- Fadi Iskandar
- The Congolese Girls
Kids’ activities hosted by:
- Ready, Set, Rec!
- The Children’s Museum
- JFCS SASIC Team
- LSS
- Pima County Public Library
We will be honoring:
- TUSD High School Graduates
- Iskashitaa Scholarship Winners 5:15-5:45 pm
Keynote speeches from:
- Amanuel, owner of Zemam’s Ethiopian Cuisine
- Pima County Community College Refugee Student
Additional activities include:
- A Mindfulness Room hosted by local mental health professionals
- A Tax Clinic facilitated by CCS
5:15-5:45 pm: Iskashitaa will be officially give awards to the Jim & Robbie Dick Memorial Social Scholarship Winners and introduce them to the community.
Don’t let Trump’s unlimited and vicious hatred for refugees ruin America. Like my own mother, who was a naturalized US citizen, refugees come to America to get jobs, be productive members of society, find homes, and learn English.
