You can help fight this attack on our voting rights, by odious toad person, Stephen Miller. Thanks to AZ List for raising this issue to my attention. I’m a proud sustaining member of AZ List, and I encourage all my readers to consider doing so, too! |
Today we have a concrete and critical action we hope you can do — please take three minutes to write a response. The federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) has been asked by the America First Legal Foundation to require a passport to prove citizenship when registering to vote — even though more than half of Americans don’t have one. |
If approved, this new rule would create new barriers for millions of eligible voters, especially women, students, rural residents, people of color, and working-class Americans. Over 146 million people don’t have a valid passport, and more than 21 million don’t have documents like a birth certificate readily available. For married women, the impact could be especially severe — 84% of women who marry change their surnames, meaning their birth certificates and sometimes their passports no longer match their legal names. This would force around 69 million women to provide additional records such as marriage or divorce certificates just to register to vote. We need your voice. Right-wing groups have already submitted over 200,000 comments supporting this harmful petition. It’s time to push back. Submit your comment HERE before October 20! Example for Organizations: YOUR ORG submits this comment in opposition to the petition submitted by America First Legal Foundation Arizona List is particularly concerned about the adverse effect this would have on many women who have chosen to change their names. This would make voting more difficult for thousands of women with whom we work. We oppose this change. Example for Individuals: I oppose the petition submitted by the America First Legal Foundation. I don’t have a passport/my passport is expired/ I have a passport but family members do not. This change will make it harder for the average American to vote, and block millions of other Americans from voting. Please don’t go through with this. |
