Pamela Powers posted earlier that Gov. Jan Brewer signed HB 2800, banning funds to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion healthcare services. Both the federal government and state of Arizona already ban funding for abortion services.
What you may not know is that "Brewer signed the measure while speaking at a reception for the Susan B. Anthony List, a group devoted to helping elect anti-abortion officials to public office." Arizona abortion-services bill signed into law.
Dr. Richard Carmona, formerly the Surgeon General of the United States, issued this press release:
Carmona statement on Arizona banning Planned Parenthood funding
Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, released the following statement in response to Governor Brewer signing a bill banning funds for Planned Parenthood:
"I was deeply disappointed by Governor Brewer's decision to sign the bill that bans funding for Planned Parenthood and other groups that provide women's health services."
"This is an example of how politics and overheated rhetoric get in the way of common sense. Planned Parenthood provides a vast array of women's health care services, often reaching under-served communities where health and economic disparities make access to quality care difficult. To say otherwise is disingenuous."
"As a doctor, I know that limiting care will lead to some predictable consequences for the health of women in our state. It's an embarrassment that our career politicians are prioritizing their own personal politics over finding solutions that actually help people."
