Dwight Leister criticizes Minority Leader Reid and Arizona Protesters

Dwight Leister again commented at Sentor Frist’s blog. Some Democrats may agree with his sentiments, but I find his elision of Latino protesters with ‘Mexican nationals breaking our laws’ to be distasteful, at best. His criticism of Senator Reid bolsters the GOP’s demogogic rhetoric over Reid’s skillful handling of the parliamentary proceedure to stop the majority from passing unrealistic policies.

Link: Senator Bill Frist – VOLPAC.

I can not support the statements of Senator Hary Ried of Nevada, when he said he voted against and obstructed the bill agreed to by everyone from Kennedy to Kly because of the Mexican Nationals making the beds at the MGM Grand!

As a member of the AFL-CIO I take that one personally and remember the Union Hotel workers whom went on strike for better wages and benifits , that were fired and replaced by Mexican Nationals!

I now know what Senator Ried means by allowing Mexican Nationals into Nevada to work on the Las Vegas Strip, as Union Busters, in favor of "WHAT GOES ON IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS," just has gotten new meaning! The Democratic Party now stands for Mexican Nationals over Union Jobs and workers?

We in Arizona are now facing marches in Phoenix and Tucson by Mexican Nationals breaking our laws and now impacting our values as a Nation built on the Rule of Law.

Continued mis-statements by Senator Ried will not just hurt the Democratic Party but The Nation will turn into a nation of "What comes into The United States "Stays" in the United States!

Is Mr. Leister aiming to be CD 8’s Joe Lieberman on immigration? If so, he’s doing an excellent job of legitimizing the GOP’s tactics. Just as Lieberman has become the GOP’s favorite Democrat to cover their failed neo-con foriegn policy with a veneer of bi-partisanship, Mr. Leister seems eager to provide cover for the GOP’s frankly racist and eliminationist hostility to immigrants with his own brand Democratic ‘me too’ jingoism.

Senator Reid responded to the rhetoric of GOP critics on immigration over the weekend in a press realease. His statement seems to apply equally to Mr. Liester’s comment:

“In a week when President Bush was unable to convince House Republicans
to pass his budget, was unable to convince Senate Republicans to pass
immigration reform, and was caught misleading the American people about
national security matters yet again, it’s no surprise that he would
take a page from the Karl Rove playbook and blame Democrats to distract
from his own troubles. The fact is, President Bush and Senator Frist
are flat out wrong about what happened to the immigration bill.
Democrats are committed to comprehensive, bipartisan immigration
reform. That’s why we voted twice last week in favor of it. It was
President Bush and Republicans in Congress who lacked the backbone to
stand up to the extreme right-wing of their party, filibustered reform
twice in two days, and put partisan politics ahead of border security
and immigration reform.”

  2. Absolutely!

I could not have said it more elequently!

I am a good friend of Senator Dennis DeConcini for over 30 years, and one thing he held to was term limits, although later than he expected because of presure from several Presidents George Bush 41 and President Clinton whom offered him C.I.A and F.B.I. respectively.

Both the Congress and the Senate need term limits. The Senate has already extended its term from 4 years to 6 years which is wrong. The Congress uses redistricting as was mis-used by Tom Delay to take back Texas after 180 years of Democrats.

The Courts are the problem in alot of this mess as they approved Congressional Districts that favor one party over another making the other half of the District’s voters irrelevent as I’am running in a Republican District that is set to be redistricted in 2010 anyway, due to Arizona gaining one or possibly two new Congressional seats.

Four terms in Congress and two terms in the Senate with two terms as President a good format.

We are headed for a three Party system faster than anyone realizes and it would be in everyones interest if Term Limits were as important as Spring Break in Washington D.C.

I hear alot of angry people that are very upset with this country as a whole and do not think “Business As Usual” is possible in the next 5 years with-out a total financial collapse.

The people Iam referring to are the very World Bankers and Globalists that are floating our currency with The Chinese Government whom refuses to let their currency float with ours making our products cheaper to them as we are keeping their currency viable.

Secretary Snow knows what to do but can’t talk to The President about holding The Chinese accountable as we can not hold The Saudi Family accountable. A curious thing happened in the last (3) three administrations they all are very close to The Chinese and The Saudi Families and put their interests before those of The United States.

Iam not sure how this will play out because it is possible that the United States Political Parties may change roles but the same people will be the major players at the top.

  3. I agree with you about the outside interests running the country.

And in the capitalist/fascist state that we have evolved into, those interests are invariably those with the most money.

And human nature and greed being what they are, and the ridiculous Congressional seniority system that we have in place, it is inevitable that enough whores will emerge from amongst the representatives to sell their votes to the highest bidder.

As the commercial says, “…that cain’t be good….”

So why is that old chestnut, “term limits” no longer in the dialogue?

It is only thru term limits that meaningful progress can be made on fundamental issues like tax equity and universal health care.

    Hallmarks of evolved societies.

  4. Please don’t think Iam “Talking Down” to anyones ideas, as I am one who thinks debate is essential and everyone should be treated equally no matter what position is taken.

Todays world has morphed into “money talks and walks” and not the interworkings of Congress as it was intended by our founding fathers.

The Senate Chamber has seats in place for each Senator. Turn on C-Span and look at what the founding fathers intended, that each Senator take his seat in the chamber and speak to the Speaker or President, with everyone else in attendance to give a forum for debate and voting.

What do you see instead,Senators not in the Senate Chamber but in some office talking to a lobbyist or taking a poll making a deal with this Senator or that Association not even being on the floor of the Senate.

Then holding a secret meeting and calling it a committee meeting and going to the Senate Chamber with a bill no one has read or even seen and expecting an up or down vote?

The first thing that should happen in both chambers the House and The Senate is that the Congressman and Senators be required to sit in the chamber with the respective Speaker or President presiding over every discussion and taking up or down votes in front of the American Public not behind closed doors!

Can you immagine how things would change overnight if that one change was made?

  5. It seems we have some PHD Psychologly Majors posting on this site and think that everything revolves around politicians and what they think runs the Country.

Reality is quite the opposite; “outsiders” run the country and influence the Politicians!

I have more influence now and in the past 50 plus years being an “irrelevent” on “relevent politicians!”

To get things done I don’t run to my nearest politician.

There are associations that hire lobbyists to do that, I just Chair the associations!

  6. Dear Metacomet

I would like to know if you think Francie Schacter is also irrelevent?

I can hear your answer as being based on her theology, but I want a more in depth explaination as to whom should run for public office and whom should not.

  7. Dear Metacomet

I agree your thesis about being irrelevent.

I take exception in a Democracy that holds elections to choose candidates ; and not to allow for a free expression of ideas is to void the electoral process.

    Is that what you want?

  8. “Never has it been more apparent why a system of checks and balances was built into our Constitution.

Because we don’t have one anymore — and we can now see the great danger of a one-party system of government.

America is now fully realizing the ruinous impact of a hostile takeover by radical, fundamentalist shock troopers who control all three branches of government. No one challenges the “unitary authority” concept used by Bush and Cheney to turn America into a nation where the president claims dictatorial powers.

Bush says, in essence, as a French king might, “Le Droit: C’est Moi!” (I am the law).

So now we have a nudnik with an extremist base running America about to be nuke a nudnik with an extremist base running Iran. Tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, will die. It may be the start of WWW III. They are both digging in their heals for rewards in heaven by destroying life on earth.

Someone should tell the nut who runs Iran, Bush is nuttier — and Cheney can match him evil for evil. It’s like two escapees from the asylum playing a game of chicken.

The only political policy Bush has is “Cream the enemy!”

We will always have many enemies. It comes with being a great power, but you can’t nuke them all.

Bush is working hard to create a newer, more fanatical generation of terrorists. Unlike all his other failed initiatives, at this he will succeed.

And we shall suffer for it.”

This is the real issue and if Democrats are distracted by the internecine BS of the border vigilante vs comprehensive overhaul of immigration policy, we will continue to enable it.

Another Rove type wedge issue that Dems can be counted on to chase, like a dog after his own tail, while the real damage continues unchallenged.

  9. Leister

I don’t think you are imbalanced.

Like Lieberman, as a nominal Democrat, you are simply irrelevant.

  10. Dear metacomet;

Gee I thought I was the only imbalanced Democrat in The State of Arizona; besides The Governor Janet Napolitano a Democrat; now you say The Chairman Of The Arizona Democratic Party whom is running for The Senate is also imbalanced?

Boy arn’t we a sorry bunch!

  11. The Mexican Constitution States:

Article 11; Undesireable Aliens are not permitted to assemble; etc:

Article 16; Mexican Nationals may arrest any Foreigner; Etc.

Article 32; Priority of Mexican Nationals over Foreigners: Etc.

Article 33; Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country; demonstrations expression of opinions in public about domestic parties; etc.

Today The arizona Legislature wanted to give Law enforcement the same rights to “Police” as Mexican Nationals have in Mexico and it passed; but Governor Napolitano said she will veto the bill because the Police, Sheriffs and County attornies are just to busy doing other things!

I realize that people on this blog say Iam imbalanced because I want to enforce the Laws now on the books in Arizona and give Law Enforcement the power to act to enforce The rule Of Law.

You now see your government NOT IN ACTION!

  12. Geo…

In the Issues section on the Pederson web site, there is this jewel, the only position statement on the border or immigration issue:

    “Securing Our Border

Jim Pederson believes that we must do everything in our power to immediately stop the flow of illegal immigrants into Arizona. Illegal immigration is endangering our security, putting a huge burden on our communities’ schools and hospitals, and undermining local law enforcement. Plus, allowing America’s laws to be broken is just plain wrong.

Jim believes that what we shouldn’t do is what Washington politicians usually do and just talk about immigration at election time and then do little to actually fix the problem. Jim will fight to make border enforcement a top priority and regain control over our borders by massively increasing the number of agents and bringing new technology to immigration enforcement.

Jim also supports bipartisan efforts to get the millions of illegal immigrants already here to step out of the shadows so we can keep track of them and ensure they are accepting the responsibilities of living in America. As an independent-minded leader focused on getting things done, Jim won’t hesitate to reach across party lines to fix the biggest problems Arizona faces.”

This is a statement that fails in its recognition of the issues and is worthy of Kyl, Sensenbrenner or the Minute Men.

It talks to the GOP base, who are not going to vote for Pederson, and alienates the Hispanics, who might.

    This is a vital issue.

If Pedersons thinking is really this caliber, I fear we are missing a great opportunity to unload a Bush clone in November.

  14. Mr. President I’m headed to Mexico

    Lee Mossman
    April 11, 2006

    Dear President Bush:

I’m about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I’m on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

    1. Free medical care for my entire family.

    2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

    3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

    4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

    5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

    6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

    7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

    8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.

    9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won’t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.

    10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.

    11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

    12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don’t enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

    13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your V.P.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

    Sincerely,
    Lee Mossman

  15. But I copied the statement from the margin of this blog that said Jeff Latas said The United States is Nazi Germany, why was it removed?

  16. What did Dwight say that is imbalanced?

  17. Metacomet, give it a little time.

It’s still very early in the 2006 race. Pederson has only now come out with his first t.v. ads (and is the earliest in state history to come out with ads in a Senatorial race). So he really has only gotten started in the campaign.

I’ve been impressed with Pederson from what I’ve learned so far, but I do want to know more. From what I DO know, though, I’m convinced he’s a far better choice than Kyl.

  18. “Saying Dwight Leister is imbalanced; with statements that The United States is Nazi Germany from Jeff Latas?”

    sheapenny:

    1. EVEN IF your formulation were accurate, it would still be a tu quoque fallacy to offer it as any mitigating argument against what I said about Dwight.

    2. However, your formulation actually is NOT accurate on two points:

    a. I didn’t say Dwight was imbalanced. I don’t even know the man, so I surely can’t attest to his mental state. I’m not Senator Frist, after all. I did note that what Dwight was saying was imbalanced, however. There’s a difference.

    b. Latas didn’t say the US was Nazi Germany, for goodness’ sake. He actually said:

“Any military action against Iran could push us into the next World War. If a nuclear option is used, the United States will be viewed in similar light as 1930’s Germany, and this nation will be facing a dismal future.”

Note that he didn’t say we ARE Nazi Germany. He said we would be VIEWED by others that way, IF we engaged in pre-emptive nuclear warfare. There’s a big difference.

Frankly, he’s absolutely right on that score. If our government is stupid and reckless enough to use nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive attack on a foreign nation – to prevent THEM from getting nuclear weapons – how do YOU thing we would be viewed by others in the world?

  19. My email today to the Pederson for Senate Campaign:

    “Immigration reform…..

You have a very ineffective position statement on this issue.

    In fact you have none.

You will need to capture the Hispanic vote to defeat Bush’s rubber stamp Kyl, and the opportunity is perfect now.

To have a statement that represents basically the position of the Minute Men, ie Securing our Border, is ridiculous.

I would suggest that you rework the “Border Security” gibberish with a more comprehensive statement of the problem, which includes the immigration issue and the treatment of illegals.

I would encourage you to check with Bill Richardson, Gov New Mexico, to develop a more comprehensive position on this winning issue.

We desperately need to get you to Congress.

Please use the opportunities for votes that the blighted GOP is giving us.

You have to represent an improvement to Kyl, not a “me too”.

The planets are aligning to your benefit now, but you have to capitalize on their message.”

I am singularly unimpressed with what I have seen so far from the Pederson camp.

Who cares if he is a succesful businessman.

We have a struggle for the future of the Republic on our hands.

The message is that Kyl is, and has always been a Bush rubber stamp.

That is his jugular and we avoid it at out peril….

Or are we going to play nice?

  20. We would like to congradulate Gabriell Giffords and the thousands of donors to her Campaign for Congress raising amost $600,000 dollars to date.

As we have been involved in both the 2004 and 2006 election cycles seeing a dismal amount of money raised in 2004 divided between two candidates now seeing everything being donated to only one candidate in record numbers is a victory of the first degree.

The second and third degree must follow as she must win the hearts and votes in the Primary; if elected must launch a effort unmatched in cd8 history of Campaign funds raised.

It will take over (2) two million dollars just to break even in votes in cd8.

    Good Job!

  21. Saying Dwight Leister is imbalanced; with statements that The United States is Nazi Germany from Jeff Latas?

  22. Big Agra Farms are the problem in Mexico, and the United States run by American interests. They are preparing to move south of the border if and when action is taken by Congress , that makes them pay benifits and a working wage to its workers.

But that is only part of the problem, they see that pesticides that were used in the past in The United States are no longer legal, and crops cost more to grow under U.S. laws.

Where we once grew grapes in California and soft fruit, big co-ops have gone into Argentina because of laws that give freedom to cross-breeding for color and shelf life that generically alter the make up of the fruit that enables shipment from far away places.

  23. Francine Shacter

There is an excellent article in today’s Salon Magazine which I receive on line, “Fear, loathing and class warfare: U.S. immigration policy: The worst of all possible worlds” by Andrew Leonard. Michael, you should get permission to reprint it here. I would summarize it but I don’t think I could do it justice!

  24. I was listening to NPR like a good boy the other night, when they interviewed an author who was tracing the link from the ratification of NAFTA to the current influx of new illegal immigrants. Essentially, his point was that once NAFTA was in effect, Mexico summarily dropped tarriffs on imported foods from US farmers. Because of the US advantage of subsidized agriculture, Mexican farmers could not compete and were forced out of their farms. They migrated to the cities, and then, not finding work there, to the US.

This is why, instead of the dramatic dropoff in illegal immigration as a result of NAFTA (I guess the thought was that a new Mexican middle-class would spring up from the ground like a crocus), we actually got a redoubling of people crossing the border. This seems like a very reasonable, if partial, explanation for some of the data we are seeing now.

    Thoughts?

  25. Werd, Tedski.

I’m not sure why this post would give Dwight the attention, really.

From the capitalized soapbox screeds, the non sequiturs, the multiple, vehement attention-grasping comments, the bizarre formulations, the strange titles (“Chair: Committee To Elect”, “First Vice Treasurer”) it’s obvious to anyone that…Dwight ain’t quite right.

I’m sorry, Dwight. I don’t mean to insult you and I have nothing against you personally. It’s clear you’re passionate about what you feel and I respect that. But what’s not clear is whether you realize that what you say is, in fact, rather imbalanced.

  26. I really have no response, but I decided that someone besides Dwight Leister needed to say something.

  27. The Arizona Daily Star has pictures of my Funeral Home at 236 S. Scott Ave. with Police Officers Arresting (3) Three people on the steps of Brings Memorial Chapel;not on the sidewalk, but on the front door entrance ramp. The pictures have a white building with palm trees and a metal fence at the Entrance to my Funeral Home from Scott, with a woman fighting arresting officers, and two men being held on the ground by arresting officers.(pictures posted on Star web-site of protesters.)

I would suggest Mexican Nationals, that are paid to protest by the Mexican Government stay off of private property.

  28. I challenge Senator Harry Reid to return Campaign Contributions given to him by the very people he sighted as a reason for “Blocking The Senate Compromise Bill on Illegall Immigration.”

    Caesar’s Entertainment Inc. $5,000 dollars.

    Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. $5,000 dollars.

Isle of Capi Casinos Inc. $2,000 dollars.

    Marriott Intertainment International Inc.
    $5,000 dollars.

  29. As far as being “Distasteful’ to Mexican Nationals;I have heard that coming from Congressman Raul Grijalvia as he called me an ;”Anlgo Saxon Male” who advises the Governor on border Issues; that is an Insult to the Mexican people!”
All I can say is “Bring It On!”

  30. Harry Reid is a LIAR! His statements do not reflect what Las Vegas did to the Union Workers on The Las Vegas Strip, when they were fired and replaced by Mexican Nationals whom came to Nevada Illegally, trucked in by Mob Bosses by the thousands to replace the Union Workers.
A curious thing happened the other evening,I received a phone call from a telemarketing agency for the Republican Party. I laughed and said I am a Candidate for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District and said Iam running as a Democrat, and mentioned that I can not support the statements of Senator Harry Reid of Nevada because he “Sold Out” the Union Workers on the Las Vegas Strip.
The Republican caller from The Republican Party told me she was a “Card Dealer” on the Las Vegas Strip and I was exactly correct in my statement. She also asked me again where I was running for Congress as a Democrat and said she would “Change her vote and vote for me as a Democrat, being a Republican, because I recognized that Harry Reid was a Liar!”
The Senate agreed on a compromise bill and announced it before the Nation; The Senators that lined up behind that bill were every known Liberal to every known conservative;what Harry Reid said as they spoke and said they had a compromise was “It is not over yet,” before anyone had a chance to vote on anything.
Harry Reid is a “Whore” for The Las Vegas Strip owners and on “The Payroll.” If the people can not accept that talk to the workers on the Las Vegas Strip, don’t talk to me!

  31. As far as “Me too” I find that flat wrong!
I did not call anyone to search for an opinion that I could “Suck up too!” We have agreed on many issues in the past going back many years. Like minded people are in every Political Party, they are called “Moderates!”

  32. Until Illegal Immigrants from Mexico have begun the process to becoming American Citizens they ARE Mexican Nationals from Mexico. Granted some are from countries OTHER than Mexico called OTM’S.
I find nothing wrong with calling people whom carry the MEXICAN FLAG in America Mexican Nationals, whom are not American Citizens.
I would like the News Media and people who address “The People with-out a Country,” to give them a Country of “Origin” until they are either deported or given “Amnesty” by Congress and President Bush.
I do align myself with Senator Joe Lieberman and Governor Janet Napolitano on the issues that are facing the American Citizens today.
