  • The Tanque Verde Democrats will be having an in-person meeting featuring Democratic candidates Brian Johnson and Sami Hamed for Pima County Treasurer and Democratic LD17 Senate candidate John McLean. Also, we will be introducing Vanessa Bechtol, Democratic candidate for Pima County Supervisor District 4. Come and be with like minded individuals and learn more about our candidates.
  • Brian JohnsonBrian is a 25-year resident of Pima County; his home is in the semi-rural community of Picture Rocks. He was born and grew up in Long Island, New York, went to college at the University of Vermont and East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, where he obtained his B.A. Degree.Brian has been a life-long Democrat, having cast his first vote for President for Jimmy Carter in 1976. He has been a member of the Democrats for Picture Rocks for eight years, serving as its’ Chair in 2021. He is also a member of the Tucson Mountain Association.
  • Sami HamedAs a lifelong Tucsonan, Sami has ingrained himself in the community by serving individuals and constituencies through his job, his volunteerism and his participation in local politics.A graduate of The Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (where he served on the school system’s statewide board of directors from 2003-2009), Hamed possess the practical skills needed to solve problems.
  • John McLeanJohn is a third generation Arizona native. Growing up, he learned the value of personal integrity, hard work, and community service from his mother (a community college professor) and father (a successful business owner).After receiving an outstanding education from his local public schools, John moved to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona before continuing on to graduate school in California. John and his wife started a family and decided to return to Tucson to raise their children in our wonderful community which offered good schools, affordable housing, and an outstanding quality of life. He has lived in Pima County for over thirty-three years.
  • Vanessa BechtolVanessa Bechtol’s nearly 20 years professional experience in public service includes working with nonprofit organizations focused on economic development, quality of life, and cultural and historic preservation. She has a track record for building creative collaborations, due in part to her eagerness to bring different perspectives to the table.She earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Latin American Studies (2000), Master of Science in Planning (2003), and a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership & Management (2021), all from the University of Arizona. Vanessa is a proud graduate of the Greater Tucson Leadership program and the Civic & Political Leadership Academy.

Carolyn’s note: The Pima County Treasurer position has two Dems running, so there will be a primary on July 30, 2024 between Brian Johnson & Sami Hamed. The winner will face off with incumbent Treasurer Republican Chris Ackerley. In LD 17 John McLean will face off with the winner of the Republican primary for Senate, and in Pima County Supervisory District 4, Vanessa Bechtol will face Republican incumbent Steve Christy.
