Misguided: Where Misinformation Starts, How it Spreads, and What to Do About It

December 6, 2024 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm MST

Misinformation Is Killing Democracy
Haitian immigrants are eating dogs and cats. The government is controlling us through chemicals spewing from airplanes. Hilary Clinton personally runs a sex trafficking ring from the basement of a pizza parlor. Once upon a time, not so long ago, conspiracy theories like these were so out there as to seem laughable. But in recent years, these bizarre beliefs have become a staple of rightwing media — helped along by malevolent billionaires and AI —  and has gone mainstream on the political right. Not surprisingly, studies show religiosity is correlated with susceptibility to conspiratorial thinking. Unfortunately, the Arizona GOP is a hotbed of magical thinking. What was once a tool used to rile the masses through hate and fear mongering is now simply the norm. And while this messed up thinking may be based in fantasyland, it has very real effects on our lives. So how we we, as people who care about rationality and reason, push back against this horrifying trend? This Friday, we’ll talk about it with Matt Facciani, a social scientist who studies misinformation. Please join us at noon for this virtual presentation.
