Before being elected to the Board of Supervisors, Matt served two terms in the Arizona State House and was chosen by his Democratic colleagues as caucus whip. In the House, he focused on seniors, veterans, and healthcare issues, working across the aisle to write and pass key legislation, including a law to make all medical complaints and patient safety information a public record. Matt stood up for injured veterans to prevent debt collectors from seizing their benefits and helped secure healthcare for seniors who need it most by ensuring access to hospice care in a time of drastic cuts. He has been a practicing hospitalist in Tucson since completing his residency here nearly 20 years ago.”

Carolyn’s note: Besides serving in the AZ House for 4 years, Dr. Heinz ran for then CD 8 two times in 2016, 2018. He defeated incumbent District 2 Democrat Supervisor Ramon Valadez in August 2020, re-elected to County Supervisor in Nov 2024.
