Five Years Ago, Andy Biggs Worked Secretly to Cancel Your Vote

Gubernatorial candidate Andy Biggs worked surreptitiously to block Arizona’s electoral votes in the 2020 election. He failed and later begged for a pardon.

Biggs, a MAGA Trumper, actively worked to nullify your vote and 3.42 million other ballots that were cast that year in Arizona. Now this dictator wannabe wants to run the state government.

According to the January 6 Select House Committee, Biggs was among at least 10 House Republicans who met with then-Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on December 21, 2020, to discuss plans for overturning the election, and he had exchanged texts with Meadows about recruiting state legislators to help challenge the results.

Right-wing organizer Ali Alexander claimed in videos (later deleted) that Biggs was a central figure in planning the “Stop the Steal” rally that turned into the Capitol riot.

The central episode involves a phone call Biggs made to then-Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, a Republican, on the morning of January 6, 2021 — while Congress was preparing to count electoral votes.

Bowers testified to the January 6 Select House Committee that Biggs called him that morning and asked “if I would sign on both to a letter that had been sent from my state and/or that I would support the decertification of the electors.” Bowers said he refused.

The committee’s report frames this as a “last-ditch effort” — Biggs’s call came right as Congress was about to convene the joint session to count votes.

The testimony was described as part of a broader hearing focused specifically on Trump’s pressure campaign against state officials.

Bowers said he told Biggs no, citing his oath to the Constitution.

Prior pressure campaign in Arizona

Biggs’s objection failed — Biden had won Arizona by more than 10,000 votes, and state and local officials counted, audited, and certified the result, with repeated investigations finding no fraud that could have changed the outcome. Even after the riot itself, Biggs still voted to object to certifying the results from Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Biggs’s January 6 morning call wasn’t an isolated incident — it came after weeks of pressure on Bowers from multiple directions:

Trump and Rudy Giuliani had already pressed Bowers to sanction an official legislative hearing where lawmakers could “take action” on the election, and to support a legal theory that the state legislature could replace Arizona’s Biden electors with phony Trump electors.

Giuliani alleged, without evidence, that roughly 200,000 undocumented immigrants and thousands of dead people had voted in Arizona — claims Bowers said were never substantiated.

Biggs was one of several House Republicans who took part in Trump’s broader effort to overturn the election, alongside figures like Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), who connected the White House to Pennsylvania legislators and DOJ official Jeffrey Clark.

The committee’s formal findings and referral

In December 2022, the committee released a 154-page introduction to its final report identifying Biggs as “a significant player” in Trump’s plans to thwart the 2020 election results.

That same report noted how Trump helped direct fake elector schemes in key states, including Arizona, to create a legal pretext for setting aside certified results.

Biggs was one of four House Republicans referred to the House Ethics Committee for failing to comply with a committee subpoena. Biggs’ name appears repeatedly throughout the panel’s final 2022 report.

The pardon plea

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified that Biggs spoke with her directly and asked for a presidential pardon. Of course, Biggs disputes this.

Biggs did not testify publicly and largely dismissed the proceedings:

He did not respond to requests for comment on Bowers’ testimony but posted statements attacking the committee, calling it “nothing more than a partisan sham perpetuated by Democrats.” He similarly called the committee a “sham” when named in the December 2022 report.

On January 6, 10,000 people came onto Capitol grounds during the seven-hour riot and at least 2,000 people made it inside the Capitol building itself.

At least seven deaths total are linked to the riot. More than 150 police officers from the Capitol Police and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department were injured, and the Department of Justice estimated the physical damage to the Capitol building itself at approximately $3 million.

Yet Biggs claimed that Capitol video footage “confirms” the events were mischaracterized, calling descriptions of an “armed insurrection” exaggerated.

The documented committee finding is specific — Biggs called Bowers on the morning of January 6 seeking his support to decertify Arizona’s Biden electors, which Bowers refused.

Biggs is Kari Lake without the dress. In Congress, Biggs rarely delivered real or meaningful results. Biggs protected a Colorado local police force tied to a polygamist sect that sexually abused girls.

Democratic incumbent Katie Hobbs says that for Arizonans, Biggs has accomplished “Nothing.” Hobbs said, “He is championing Washington’s cost-hiking agenda that is hurting Arizonans every day.”
