Press release from the Grijalva for Congress campaign:
Tucson, Ariz. – Today we launched The Truth About Ruth, a new web site laying out the facts about Ruth McClung's extreme, under-the-radar positions on the issues important to Southern Arizona. Her public statements on Social Security, taxes, education, Wall Street reform and other issues haven't yet received extensive public scrutiny, and the site focuses on quoting McClung in her own words — often spoken in friendly environments beyond mainstream media attention — to better inform voters about her record.
"When my opponent says Wall Street reform is going to cause another Great Depression, the voters of Southern Arizona need to know," Grijalva said. "She doesn't just want to privatize Social Security — she's called it a 'failed Ponzi scheme' and once said, 'There is no such thing as Social Security.' If that's how she really feels, why doesn't she level with voters about that? Why don't we see her ads on the air telling everyone, 'I want to privatize a program I think is a failed Ponzi scheme?' Why didn't she show up at Monday's debate to tell voters about her vision of America's retirement system?
"Her message is out of step with the needs, the hopes and the aspirations of our community. Families, students and retirees deserve to hear from her directly on why she thinks massive corporate tax cuts are going to help our working families, why she opposes Social Security, why she wants to take money out of public education for private charter schools, and why she wants to expand the deficit by more than $700 billion over the next decade by slashing taxes for the top two percent of earners.
"All we're asking for is an honest debate," Grijalva said. "She needs to level with voters, and those voters need to make an informed choice based on more than soundbites. If she won't tell people how she feels, they can come to this site for the truth in her own words."
