Sponsored By Citizens For A Safer Pima County (CSPC)
Event: Gun Show Protest. Crossroads Gun Show will take place at the Pima County Fairgrounds Nov. 2-3. Private dealers at the show, who could make up at least 30% of the sellers, are not required to be licensed, and any person can purchase a gun from them without any sort of background check. Citizens for a Safer Pima County (CSPC) is very concerned that this potentially dangerous situation is taking place on taxpayer-supported property—being promoted on the Pima County Fair website.
Why: Research reveals, and TPD’s Chief Magnus confirms, that gun shows provide a loophole for easy and abundant access to firearms where felons, domestic abusers, severely mentally ill, and those who have failed a background check can anonymously purchase weapons. Until the laws are changed to require background checks on all purchases, for the sake of public safety CSPC believes that the Pima County Fairgrounds (a publically owned space) should not be a venue for the sale of guns that have been purchased without a background check. We are asking the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Southwestern Fair Commission to do their job and put public safety First!
Over the past 7 months, our members have tried to discuss these public safety concerns with the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Southwestern Fair Commission. However, neither body has responded either verbally or in writing.
Two of our members attended the September Fair Commission meeting to discuss the gun show issue. Not only were their concerns ignored, but the Chairman of the Fair Commission read a prepared statement announcing “gun shows” would not (ever) be put on the agenda. Since diplomatic efforts have been exhausted, we feel it is our moral responsibility to bring these actions to public awareness.
Where: If you’d like to be part of bringing about gun sense changes on the ground here at home, please join us Sun. Nov. 3, 1p.m. at the Fairgrounds, 11300 S. Houghton Rd.(off I-10 E. Houghton Exit) (See Carpooling info below.) At this point, we have not heard back from the County to confirm if we can protest inside the gate. So the plan is to meet outside the gate and have a peaceful protest against the dangerous gun show loophole, and in favor of Universal Background checks. It will include several speakers and last no longer than an hour.
Carpooling: If you would like to carpool to the site, starting at 11:45a.m. we will be gathering in the 2nd Street parking lot of St. Marks Church (a block west of Alvernon) to share the ride out to the Fairgrounds. We plan to leave there no later than 12:15p.m.For more info contact Tony at 520-390-5794 or Molly at 520-271-8978.
