Impeachment in Tucson

As many of you will have read in Daniel Scarpinato’s piece on impeaching Cheney , Raul Grijalva has signed on a co-sponsor of resolution 799 (was 333). That means that we here in Southern Arizona have finished half of our responsibility to get our Representatives on board. Grijalva deserves our thanks and our support for truly representing the sentiments regarding this issue of those who elected him to Congress. If you are in his district, take a minute and let him know you appreciate his stance. If you are outside his district, take another minute and give his Tucson office a call (ph (520) 622-6788) and let them know how you feel.

Of course, that leaves Gabby Giffords as our main target of persuasion in Southern Arizona. She has always maintained that impeachment is out of her hands because the leadership is against it. Well, here’s her chance to prove where she really stands on the issue of constitutional governance. Her vote to table Kucinich’s resolution when it came to the floor doesn’t inspire any confidence. Here’s her chance to win our confidence back.

If you live in Ed Pastor or Harry Mitchell’s district, get out there and start marching, writing letters, and making phone calls. All of Arizona’s Democrats should be on board. There is nothing scary here; the Arizona Democratic Party passed an pro-impeachment resolution, so they will just be following the will of their own party by co-sponsoring an impeachment resolution.

An ad hoc group of non-aligned, pro-constitution, anti-monarchy
advocates will be demonstrating outside of Congresswoman Giffords’
office again this Monday from 4pm to 6pm.  They’ll be taking a break for
a couple of weeks after this Monday, so they hope to make this demonstration an impressive

You can make a sign that
speaks your message to Gabby, or just show up, because they have plenty of
pointed, but polite signs to display.  ("Honk to Impeach" and "Support
H Res 799 – Call Gabby at 881-3588" are two pretty good ones.)

If you
wish, you may drop in to her office before 5pm and ask a staffer to
take a personal message.  It will be filled out for you, as you dictate
it. Stay for an hour or just awhile. It’s good for the soul….

anyone can come and take good video of the demonstration to distribute on the
web, it  would inspire others around the state and country to get
active locally.

  1. Blaise Pascal:
Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical.

    Frederick Douglass:
Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

  2. I agree with all of you “Impeachment” drum beaters. The Democrats should start impeachment immediately. That’s just what we need now is to distract the public from the upcoming 2008 Presidential election by going after guys that have a year left in office (less after impeachment would start).

Get even more people pissed-off at Congress by diverting the effort in congress from doing the “people’s work” with a worthless witch-hunt that will end the same way the worthless witch-hunt went for Clinton. (Get that approval rating down into the single digits and set the record for the most reviled Congress in history!!!).

The American people (most of whom by the way are not rabid leftists or right wingers like us) just love it when you needlessly waste time and their tax dollars. Just ask the majority of Republicans that led the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Oh that’s right, they’re not in office since many of them lost the next election.

People will love it when the party that said it was going to work hard 5 days a week (Oh, that’s right, they went back to 4 days a week) and implement sweeping changes (Oh that’s right, they haven’t done jack with the exception of the Defense bill, which by the way they totally surrendered to that so-called “stupid Texan” that once again whipped their political behinds by getting the funding he asked for without a troop withdrawal attached). It’s a good thing he’s so dumb or the Democrats might have declared war on Iran before the year was over.

I think impeachment is just what the GOP doctor ordered to get the Congress back into GOP hands. So go ahead and impeach away!!!

  3. We’ve had two successful demonstrations, including today’s. Giffords’ staff was presented with a copy of the ARG November impeachment poll results (available at showing very significant interest in Cheney’s impeachment.

Our next demonstration will be Monday, Jan 8th, again from 4pm to 6pm at Pima and Swan. The more, the merrier! We’ve got extra signs, with suggestions for even better ones — and they’ll be ready to go then.

Next time, we will present her with the AZ Dem resolution to impeach.

  4. You can also remind her that the Arizona Democratic Party strongly supports the impeachment of VP Cheney via the ADP resolution,

    Abuse of Power Resolution

WHEREAS, George W. Bush, Richard B. Cheney and Alberto Gonzalez have acted in a manner contrary to their trust as President, Vice President and Attorney General, subversive of the Constitution, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of Arizona and the United States of America, by intentionally disseminating and propagating knowingly false and fabricated “evidence” regarding the threat from Iraq in order to wage a tragic, bloody war with the loss of thousands of brave American troops and Iraqi civilians, and

WHEREAS, it is clear that since September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney and Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez have abused their powers of office by: 1) using information they knew to be false as justification for the U.S. invasion of Iraq; 2) condoning and authorizing the torture of prisoners of war; 3) authorizing wiretaps on U.S. citizens without obtaining a warrant; 4) disclosing the name of an undercover CIA operative contrary to law in order to harm her for her husband’s opposition to the Iraq War; 5) having suspended and denied the historic Writ of Habeas Corpus by ordering the indefinite detention of so-called enemy combatants without charge and without access to legal counsel; and 6) overstepping Presidential authority by signing statements used to ignore or circumvent portions of over 750 Congressional statutes he brought into law.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Arizona Democratic Party calls upon its Arizona U.S. Senators and Representatives to vote for all resolutions and bills consistent with vigorous investigation of these charges by the Congress of the United States, including the full use of Congressional subpoena power authority to completely disclose the actions of the Administration to the American people and to take necessary action to call the Administration to account with appropriate remedies including the examination of possible grounds for impeachment.

  5. I echo Mike. Please take one quick minute to call Giffords office and let her know how you feel on this issue; her staff is very professional, and she will definitely be made aware of your call and comment. Remember, our elected officials get surprisingly little actual feedback from their constituents, so each phone call, email or letter carries quite a bit of weight.
