Uncover
the truth about marriage for gay and lesbian Americans. "8"—a new play
by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J.
Edgar)—demystifies the debate around marriage equality by chronicling
the landmark trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Hollingsworth v.
Perry). Learn about the historical context of marriage from expert
testimony. See the human cost of discrimination. Uncover the arguments
used to justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Using the
actual court transcripts from the landmark federal trial of California's
Prop. 8 and first-hand interviews, "8" shows both sides of the debate
in a moving 90-minute play reading.
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on Prop 8 later this month.
“8”
will be produced by the Arizona Theatre Company and directed by Matthew
Wiener, Producing Artistic Director of Actors Theatre-Phoenix. Fred DuVal is the executive producer.
Cast members include Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Tucson Councilpersons Karen Uhlich and Steve Kozachik, former
State Senator Paula Aboud, Arizona Daily Star Editorial Cartoonist
David Fitzsimmons, Arizona Theatre Company Artistic Director David Ira
Goldstein, local actor Roberto Guajardo, Southern Arizona AIDS
Foundation Executive Director Wendell Hicks, Cox Communications Vice
President Lisa Lovallo, State Representative Victoria Steele, former
television news anchor Martha Vazquez and former Arizona Attorney
General Grant Woods.
Additional cast members will be announced in the coming weeks.
The play will benefit the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), Wingspan, Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, Alliance Fund and the University of Arizona Office of LGBTQ Affairs. AFER holds the licensing rights for “8” along with Broadway Impact.
