Everyone is probably familiar with Trump’s recent petty attacks on the late Senator John McCain.
John McCain is an American hero and I am thankful for his life of service and legacy to our country and Arizona. Everyone should give him and his family the respect, admiration, and peace they deserve.
— Martha McSally (@MarthaMcSally) March 20, 2019
McSally responded to President Trump’s attack on McCain with some very weak tea indeed. And I am not the only one who thinks so. I will credit that she says “everyone”, presumably including President Trump, should respect his memory and family, but not everyone attacked him: Trump did.
A common comment on her thread is that she really ought to have directed this tweet to @realDonaldTrump. I agree.
Others who knew McCain, such as Arnold (yes, that one) were much more direct and vocal in their condemnation of Trump’s attack.
“He was just an unbelievable person,” Schwarzenegger said. “So an attack on him is absolutely unacceptable if he’s alive or dead—but even twice as unacceptable since he passed away a few months ago. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to do that. I just think it’s a shame that the president lets himself down to that kind of level. We will be lucky if everyone in Washington followed McCain’s example, because he represented courage.”
That’s how to defend a dead friend and mentor.
Other Senators, such as Utah’s Mitt Romney, were also more direct in their criticism of the President’s pique.
I can’t understand why the President would, once again, disparage a man as exemplary as my friend John McCain: heroic, courageous, patriotic, honorable, self-effacing, self-sacrificing, empathetic, and driven by duty to family, country, and God.

Of course he used his personal Twitter handle, not his official one to make the statement, but that’s probably because his personal handle has a lot more followers right now. Nor did he mention @realDonaldTrump, but at least Romney named him.
Someone with more dog in the fight is, of course, one of McCain’s daughters, who wrote:
@realDonaldTrump Everyone doesn’t have to agree with my dad or like him, but I do ask you to be decent and respectful. If you can’t do those two things, be mindful. We only said goodbye to him almost 7 months ago. (1/2)

@realDonaldTrump Even if you were invited to my dad’s funeral, you would have only wanted to be there for the credit and not for any condolences.
Unfortunately, you could not be counted on to be courteous, as you are a child in the most important role the world knows. (2/2)— Bridget🌻 (@bridgieleela) March 21, 2019
Be more like Bridgette, Senator McSally: directly addressing the President’s twitter handle and telling it like it is. Only when people push back and mean it, publically, can an ego like Trump’s be pricked.
So why is our notoriously feisty and potty-mouthed Senator so reluctant to push back on President Trump? No doubt it is down to the lock he has on the GOP base, but I think McSally’s craven calculation is all wrong.
Everyone knows, and even his supporters are likely to believe and admit, that President Trump is a grade-A asshole. Shit, even Trump is likely to admit it. Why can’t we all?
Trump is just an asshole. The country ought to call a spade a spade and recognize we have an gold-plated asshole in the Oval.
I think McSally would have done well to call him one to his face. He’d probably respect her more, as would his base. Watch how easy this is Senator McSally:
@realDonaldTrump Donald, you are a real asshole for attacking late Senator McCain. Not only do you disrespect his memory and family by making disparaging comments about a dead man who cannot defend himself, but you belittle the office you hold with such insipid public attacks.

That wasn’t so hard.
Stop acting like a battered wife around Trump and stand up for Arizona’s favorite fallen son, Senator! You are holding his seat by appointment; act like you fucking deserve it!
