VOTE NO on ALL 8 Statewide Ballot Propositions

The Pima County Democratic Party is calling on all voters to VOTE NO on all 8 ballot propositions dumped onto the ballot by the corrupt Republican-led Legislature.

Speaking at the August 25 meeting of the LD18 Democrats, Gail Kamaras identified the toxic propositions as No. 141, 142 and 144 that would amend the state constitution. Propositions No. 316, 317, 318, 319 and 320 would enact harmful state laws.

Kamaras is a precinct committee member, the lead of LD18’s Pantano Territory, and a state Democratic Party Hall of Fame inductee.

Prop. 141 would prohibit taxing electric vehicles based on miles traveled. It would create a permanent loss of potential tax revenue, as electric vehicles do not pay fuel tax.

Prop. 142 is an anti-DEI measure. “It is what I call ideological censorship. This culture war-driven measure would block teachers from discussing accurate history, censor certain content from being taught in schools, and ban trainings on how to support LGBTQ plus staff and students,” Kamaras said.

Prop. 144 is specifically designed to kill voting by mail and to limit your voting rights. It would also force voters to resubmit proof of ID every time they vote. 

Prop. 316 limits how much cities can tax food. There are no state sales taxes on food, but some cities do tax food. Disguised as tax relief, Prop 316 was designed by the legislature to handcuff cities and towns by restricting the revenue they need for firefighters, police, libraries, parks and street maintenance.

Prop. 317 would allow the state to randomly designate “drug cartels” as terrorist organizations. That designation would give absolutely unlimited authority to the Arizona Department of Homeland Security to act against anyone it deems part of a “drug cartel.”

Prop. 318 is an anti-trans bathroom bill. “It would enshrine discrimination against a tiny group of trans girls to exclude them from all sports,” Kamaras said. It would also apply to any trans person using public facilities such as locker rooms, showers or bathrooms.

Prop. 319 is a backdoor way to defund the voter-created Clean Elections Commission. It’s labeled as a “photo radar ban,” but it’s actually designed to defund the Clean Elections Commission. Traffic fines include a mandatory 10% surcharge for the Commission, which provides public funding to candidates who agree not to take private or special interest money.

Prop. 320 limits public school funding. “It is designed to micromanage and cripple public schools, but not charter or private schools,” Kamaras said. The measure would force public schools to spend at least 60% of their funding on “direct instructional spending,” meaning teacher pay, or have the state withhold the difference.
