Media Archeology

I noticed this painted sign in downtown Tucson. It is hard to read, but the paint blacking it out has faded from the sun enough to read the original message. "Help end the war by Dec. 31. 1971. Join Common Cause."

Seemingly, someone wasn’t satisfied with that date and added "NOW" in red letters. Needless to say, the phone number has long since been reassigned to a residential subscriber, so please don’t disturb them.

I found it ironic that nearly 35 years later, as this archeological media emerged, we are in yet another war of choice that is going badly and dividing America. Common Cause is not at the forefront of the struggle to end the war in Iraq, but they still do important work.

It would be interesting if somebody purchased the rights to use that wall and placed a new painted sign above or below the original with the message, "Help end the war again…" It would be impractical now, however, as the wall faces in the opposite direction as the flow of one-way traffic. Only pedestrians are likely to notice, and how many of those are there these days, even downtown? And I only noticed this the hundredth time I walked by.
