Our ‘cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs’ Governor has a conspiracy theory

Nicole Wallace, who was tasked with the impossible job of turning Sarah Palin into someone who looked like she had a clue, wrote a novel inspired by what she calls a woman who is "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" making it to the White House. Subtle, Nicole.

It's no wonder Governor Jan Brewer and the halfling Governor of Alaska, the Quitta from Wasilla, are the "bestest" of friends. Our governor is equally "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs." Don't believe it? Gov. Jan Brewer said she’s uncomfortable with a bill that would require some women to prove they’re using birth control for non-contraceptive reasons, but said the debate raging at both the state and national level is just election-year politics by Democrats who are hoping to drive women from the GOP.

“From what it appears, it might be an issue that has gained fire by our opposing party. I think that it’s a Democrat ploy to kind of put a wedge, if you will, between Republicans and women,” Brewer told reporters today.

Brewer may not be buying into Democratic attacks accusing the GOP of waging a “war on women,” but she indicated there may be some substance to Democratic arguments.

She said she’s mostly unfamiliar with HB2625, which allows any employer with religious or moral objections to not purchase health insurance plans that include birth control, but allows women access to contraception of they can show they’re using it for other medical reasons. But Brewer had concerns about the provision requiring women who need contraception for other medical reasons to provide an affidavit to their employers.

“I certainly probably agree with the majority of people that that would be a little bit uncomfortable for a woman to have to go to her employer and tell him or her their health private issues,” Brewer said.

Brewer said she understands that the bill is Republican legislation and doesn’t know if the bill was introduced to be a wedge issue. But despite her reservations about the bill, which was sponsored by Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko, Brewer insisted that the controversy over birth control was being driven by the left.

“Love is in bloom. It’s election time,” she said. “Arizona, of course, has been targeted as one of the five points by the Democrats to turn our state blue. We know that they’re trying to make an issue out of class warfare. They’re trying to make an issue out of women’s issues. And this is just possibly a wedge that now has escalated to this point. Do I know that for a fact? No. But I’m well-versed enough as a politician to suspect that.”

Yes, "The Democrats made me do it" defense. Seriously? It wasn't Democrats who drafted a package of anti-abortion and anti-birth control bills; it was Cathi Herrod and her Christian Taliban at Center for Arizona Policy. It wasn't Democrats who sponsored these bills; it was God's Own Party (GOP) Tea-Publicans. And not one Democrat has voted for these bills; it has been a party-line vote with GOP Tea-Publicans voting in favor of these bills.

Restricting women's access to abortions and health care, and now even contraception, has been part of GOP "wedge issue politics of division" for decades. The technique was perfected by Lee Atwater, who was rewarded for his "politics of personal destruction" against Michael Dukakis in 1988 by being named RNC Chairman. This is how the GOP rolls (see Karl Rove).

I know reporters like to do stenography whenever Jan Brewer speaks, but really — when Jan Brewer engages in "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" conspiracy theories, reporters have an obligation to call her out on it, or you are no better than an enabler for her craziness. Just ask Nicole Wallace.
