Pima Sheriff Nanos Calls for Gun Control

“The only people who should have guns are policemen. When I was growing up as a young kid, my mom wouldn’t let us have a BB gun.”

“I am so adamant against guns. I don’t know what to tell you, but that’s just my belief,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said yesterday at a meeting of Democrats of Greater Tucson.

“I just am not a fan of guns. More guns bring more problems. I understand there’s hunting, target shooting and some great recreation. But why can’t we at least just get to a common ground?

How about something that says, ‘If you’ve been designated as somebody who suffers from mental health issues, you shouldn’t have a weapon.’ The system says you can’t require general background checks. Why can an 18-year-old go and buy an assault weapon?

Assault weapons cause more deaths.

There have been 263 mass shootings so far for 2023

Assault weapons cause far deadlier mass casualty events than other firearms. In fact, in shootings where assault weapons or large-capacity magazines are used, 155% more people are shot, and 47% more people are killed. These firearms are designed to kill as many people as possible in the shortest time — they are weapons of war and do not belong on our streets or our communities.

Six people were murdered in a mass shooting in Tucson in 2011: Christina-Taylor Green, age 9, Federal District Judge John Roll, Gabe Zimmerman, an aide to Rep. Giffords, Phyllis Schneck, Dorothy Morris, and Dorwan Stoddard.

Sen. Feinstein, Dianne (D-CA) introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2023, S.25, in January. It is assigned to the Judiciary Committee. “Let’s just find one area of common ground in Congress. Find that one area.”

Nanos reminded listeners that six people died and 13 were injured, including Congress member Gabby Giffords, in a mass shooting in Tucson on January 8, 2011.

It can’t happen again.

“It just can’t happen again here in Pima County,” Nanos said. “Christina-Taylor Green [age 9] died in the January 8 incident. We sat there and saw that.”

“That’s how hard it is for our Board of Supervisors to say, ‘You cannot sell weapons at a county fairground. You’re not going to do that,’” Nanos said.

“The city council won a lawsuit in 2002 saying they have the right to stop you from selling weapons without background checks on the city grounds at the Tucson Convention Center (TCC). So why can’t we do that at the County Fairgrounds?” Immediately afterward, the legislature enacted A.R.S. § 13-3108, which now forbids local governments from requiring background checks in gun sales. Pressed by Supervisor Rex Scott, the county is researching a court case to strike down the law.

Do you know what they showed me at the fairgrounds? There were signs on the back of the trunk of a car. It said, ‘No background checks.’ Who are they saying that to? They’re telling the bad guy, ‘You can buy from me. We don’t check your background.’ How is that responsible?

A Fox News poll found that 88 percent of voters support background checks on all gun sales.

  1. I was tempted to weigh in here, but I think our fine and razor-witted readers have stomped Johnny Blog Jester into the dirt sufficiently…

  2. So the sheriff believes that the only people who should be allowed to own guns are police officers like himself. Wow! I hope he puts that on his campaign brochures next time so the people vote him out. That position goes far beyond what the most ardent gun control advocates want. His position is really weird. Do you agree with that Larry?

    • Hey everyone! Look at me! I’m John Government Checks Kavanagh and I’m here to own the libs!

Trolling at a 7th grade mean girl level.

I can’t help but hear a whiny little voice saying “do you agree with that Larry, huh, do you, do you”.

      Childish.

The sheriff’s position isn’t weird, JGCK, he’s talking about making people safer.

      That’s his actual job.

You’re here trolling for campaign brochure meat instead of working to solve Arizona’s problems, like our water being siphoned off and sent to the Middle East.

Oh well, rather than dwell on the sorry state of the AZGQP and how this guy beclowns his own racist ass here on the reg, how about we do something that feels good.

Donate to RaicesTexasDotOrg in honor of 7th Grade Mean Girl Johnny Government Paychecks Kavanagh and then take the rest of the say off, you’ve achieved greatness!

    • “So the sheriff believes that the only people who should be allowed to own guns are police officers like himself.”

Johnny, did you even read this post in it’s entirety?

Sheriff Nanos clearly states that his personal belief is that he doesn’t like guns. But his political position on gun reform is, “But why can’t we at least just get to a common ground?” And he goes on to talk about mental health, background checks, and assault weapons being sold to teenagers. Most Americans are in agreement with his position.

I don’t see how you could misinterpret something so clearly stated.

        • I read your post, Johnny. Then why would you suggest he put his personal beliefs on a campaign brochure? Apparently he is willing to talk about his personal beliefs regarding gun ownership which you consider extreme. But as an elected official, he supports passing gun reform laws where we have already found common ground, background checks etc…

Of course, sometimes the elected or appointed representatives of the people will ram their personal beliefs down everyone’s throat after saying they wouldn’t. Just consider the SCOTUS justices who swore at their confirmation hearings that Roe v Wade was established law and then voted to overturn it.

Even so, I don’t think we have much to fear from the Sheriff. It’s not like he’s a grifting, lying Trump appointee.

          • John Government Checks Kavanagh hasn’t explained his views on gun control.

            That’s because he’s the extremist.

But he doesn’t know that because he lives in a bubble of Fox and other actual fake news outlets.

And by not sharing his views he avoids accountability for those views.

In other words, he’s a lame-ass troll boy. fishing.

Well, you know what’s coming, RaicesTexasDotOrg isn’t lame-ass, no sir, they provide free and/or low cost legal help to immigrants.

And lord knows we need more immigrants, what with right wing gun laws allowing 2 or more mass shootings a day, and 2 school shootings a week.

John Government Checks Kavanagh knows we’ll need to replenish the population with new people since his views on guns are why so many children are being splattered all over their school room walls.

          • So a politician’s personal beliefs do not matter, except for appointed supreme court justices. Liza, you are tripping over your own spin. (Note that I did not use a disrespectful variation of your name as you do to me. Not only because it is disrespectful but also because it doesn’t advance your point, except with idiots but them maybe it works at BfA. )

          • “Note that I did not use a disrespectful variation of your name…”

Ha ha, do you mean “Lizzie”? I’ve been called that most of my life by some people. It’s not my favorite but I never considered it to be disrespectful.

Yes, John Kavanaugh, a politician’s personal beliefs matter in that it’s good to know who you’re voting for or against. But politicians represent constituents, and the good ones (none of whom are Republicans) understand how a representative democracy should work. It’s not spin and I’m not tripping. The Trump SCOTUS liars were not truthful at their confirmation hearings about Roe. Now it’s their mission along with Roberts and world class grifters Thomas and Alito to destruct 50 plus years of democratic achievement. I’m sure that pleases you, Mr. Kavanaugh, but it does not please the majority of Americans.

            Happy 4th.

          • John Government Checks Kavanagh cuts his losses and run.

            Typical fake conservative coward.

        • John Government Checks Kavanagh still hasn’t given his views on guns, but he demands to know the views of others.

So we can only surmise that his lack of action means he’s 100% in favor of watering the tree of liberty with the blood of children.

Most people would prefer to have their children come home from school alive. They’d like to go to the mall or the movies or church are not be slaughtered.

You are the extremist, John Government Checks and Dead Schoolchildren Kavanagh.

The sheriff is with the majority.

You’re just too dumb to recognize that you live in a bubble, and your brain is too broken to realize that not everyone is a broken a human being as you, JGCDSK.

Good lord, this guy is beyond clueless.

          • “Good lord, this guy is beyond clueless.” Well Sharpie, what can one expect from a Trumpwipe like JGCK?

          • Wileybud, you’d think he’d be too embarrassed to come here demanding respect, because we know who he is and what he stands for.

He’s a racist ALEC shill who doesn’t think everyone should be allowed to vote. He makes laws that hurt families and children. He instigates hate and fear against innocent refugees.

He lies and spins and makes threats (what a loser) while making feeble attempts (but the best he can do) to catch liberals being hypocrites, usually ending up looking stupid in the process.

A purveyor of fine hate and fear who stands for whatever ALEC and the Kansas billionaires tell him to stand for and he embarrasses Arizona every time he speaks.

He hates America, Americans, Democracy, and the US Constitution, and we have his public statements to back that up if he has a problem with me saying it.

            Falcon9 was bad enough.

The only reason John Government Checks Kavanagh hasn’t met the same electoral fate as Pearce and Arpaio is because he runs unopposed.

Which is funny as fuck, because competition is the rally cry for Capitalism, and he claims to be a capitalist supporter.

The dude would last ten minutes in the private sector, he doesn’t think things through, so he’s lucky he gets to live off of hardworking taxpayers.

          • “The only reason John Government Checks Kavanagh hasn’t met the same electoral fate as Pearce and Arpaio is because he runs unopposed.”

And why is that? Is it the State Democratic Party? Maricopa County Democratic Party? Are the organizations that could challenge him thinking he’s too formidable an opponent? Just like the Arizona Lottery ads say “You can’t win if you don’t play”.

  3. I think Sheriff Nanos is right. If guns made Americans safer, we’d be the safest place on the planet. We aren’t. As of today, June 28 there have been 331 mass shootings and 21,963 have been killed in America by gun violence. Gun violence is the leading cause of chidlhood death. So why are Americans SO apathetic. Because it hasn’t happened to them. That’s why. But it will, because it affects people in all areas, rural or urban. Background checks, safe storage laws, red flag laws. They work in the states that have them. But we in Arizona will likely never know because in our current political environment, nobody is listening.

  4. I couldn’t agree more! The absolute MINIMUM requirements we should have for owning ANY gun of any sort….. is to require REGISTRATION, LICENSING, AND LIABILITY INSURANCE…. the same thing required for anyone to drive a vehicle!!!

It makes ZERO sense to require LESS than this for someone to own and carry a weapon DESIGNED TO KILL, than the requirements for a vehicle, which was NOT designed to kill, but MAY ACCIDENTALLY cause a death!!!
