Equal parts personal and political, the stirring documentary Represent follows three women on both sides of the aisle who share the singular goal of improving their community through public service. Twenty-two-year-old activist Myya Jones, a former Congressional intern and college senior, attempts to spark a youth movement and unseat the incumbent mayor of Detroit; Bryn Bird, a farmer and working mother in Granville, OH, runs for township trustee and is thrust into the center of a fight against the conservative “old boys network” that has long controlled their quiet town; and Julie Cho walks a tightrope between her identities as a Korean immigrant and Republican candidate for State Representative in a liberal Chicago suburb. Through the lens of local politics, Represent examines the systems that have failed historically underrepresented candidates, and bears witness to the unseen leaders striving at the heart of our “smallest” elections. (Dir. by Hillary Bachelder, USA, 2020, 93 mins., Not Rated)
