Sen. Linda Lopez to resign, Pima County BOS to appoint successor

The Tucson Weekly reported Wednesday that state Sen. Linda Lopez (D-LD 2) will resign in January. Sen. Linda Lopez Resigning Next Month. My sources confirm this.

LD 2 will have to hold a special meeting of precinct committee persons to nominate three individuals to refer to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, which will appoint the successor to Sen. Lopez.

The Weekly speculates that Legislative District 2 Rep. Andrea Dalessandro, former state lawmaker Tom Prezelski, and historic preservation champion Demion Clinco, are in the mix. I hear District 2 Rep. Rosanna Gabaldon is also a possibility.

Rep. Andrea Dalessandro posted on Facebook declaring her intentions to seek the Senate seat:

Andrea Dalessandro

I was recruited a few months ago but I did not want to make it public until Linda Lopez spoke of her pending resignation in public. She did last night at the Arizona Women's Political Caucus Holiday Party. I was planning on running for the Senate in 2016 when Linda would have been termed out. I am seeking the appointment to the Senate.

Should Dalessandro or Gabaldon move up to the Senate, this would result in another vacancy and another special meeting of precinct committee persons to nominate three individuals to refer to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, which will appoint their successor.
