Senate Democratic Leader Priya Sundareshan Calls Out MAGA Republican Obstructionism on Protecting Arizona’s Ground Water

In a social media post on March 12, 2025, Arizona Senate Democratic Priya Sundareshan called out Legislative MAGA Republicans for their joining lawsuits that put corporate interests and profits over the protection of the Grand Canyon state’s water supply.

The Senator has been a vocal advocate for protecting Arizona’s groundwater since joining the legislature and was with Governor Katie Hobbs when she announced a bipartisan plan, The Rural Groundwater Act, to protect it.

Sparked by the Legislative Republicans’ support for a lawsuit by homebuilders against the Department of Water Quality, which is requiring a guarantee of 133 years of water supply where they construct new homes, Sundareshan remarked that:

Republicans do not care about hearing real solutions to protect our groundwater. The lawsuit that Arizona Republicans brought this week tries to challenge the Department of Water Resources’ (ADWR) attempt to help find a pathway for water providers to achieve designation, and therefore keep building homes. Designation of water providers are the responsible way to move forward with development and provides a pathway for more development in this era of constrained water that we’re in. But rather than work with the Department and these water providers to keep building responsibly, they are trying to tear down water protections even for existing homeowners in the Phoenix area, which is the other lawsuit home builders filed this year…”

“… Our state desperately needs to see progress on groundwater protections and when Democrats introduced bills to do just that Republicans killed those bills by refusing to even give them a Committee hearing. The Republicans are once again proving that water and housing are nothing more than just political talking points for them. ADWR, has, despite decades of Republican obstruction, found a framework to protect our groundwater supplies where Legislative Republicans are failing.”

Punching down at our state agencies is not leadership and this move is nothing more than a cheap preview of the election cycle fights ahead of us. But last time I checked Republicans and Democrats need water. All the same.”

Republicans at the State Capitol need to come to grips with reality. No matter how far they stick their science denying heads in the sand and try to take away regulations and funds geared toward combatting pollution and climate change, water security is a problem that needs to be dealt with now, not a hundred years from now when it may be too late.
