Take The ‘Democracy Pledge’ For Corporate Accountability To Defeat Jim Crow 2.0

Update to Time For A Corporate Accountability Campaign To Defeat Jim Crow Voter Suppression Bills In Arizona.

Former federal prosecutor and MSNBC contributor Glenn Kirschner has launched a campaign to press American businesses to openly reject the core assertion that former President Donald Trump and many in his party continue to make, that the 2020 election was somehow illegitimate. ‘Democracy Pledge’ Aims To Put Businesses On The Spot Over Trump’s Election Lie:

“The 2020 presidential election was free and fair, and produced accurate, reliable results,” reads the explanation behind the “Democracy Pledge” that Glenn Kirschner hopes to put before “every company in the country” in the coming months. “Those who sought to undermine or otherwise refused to acknowledge these results, share responsibility for the civil unrest after the election, culminating in violence at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.”

The pledge includes a declaration of “valuing, affirming and supporting democracy,” and of affirming “that the election of Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris was free, fair and legitimate.”

The final piece asks companies to “not support, donate to or endorse politicians, political campaigns or political action committees that promoted false conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 presidential elections (or otherwise acted in ways contrary to a representative democracy).”

“What we’re trying to do is force companies’ hands so they can’t be agnostic,” Kirschner said.

Trump began lying about the election results in the wee hours of election night and continued straight through Jan. 6, when he told a crowd of his supporters gathered near the White House to march on the Capitol to intimidate Vice President Mike Pence and members of Congress into overturning the election Trump had lost by 7 million votes and giving him a second term anyway. Three police officers were left dead, and 140 others were injured. Hundreds of Trump supporters who attacked police or breached the building have been arrested, with hundreds of more arrests pending.

Yet Trump and many top Republicans have never apologized for spreading the lies about the “stolen” election and “massive voter fraud” that fueled his followers’ anger in the first place.

As of late Friday, 23 firms were featured on the Democracy Pledge website, from a photography workshop in Missoula, Montana, to a law office in Melbourne, Florida. Kirschner said he and his fellow volunteers have not actively approached any companies yet; those on the site now came to them, he said.

He added that he doubts many companies will straight up refuse to take the pledge, but anticipated many will avoid responding at all. He said those names will, after some period, be listed, as well. “And then we’re going to provide that information to consumers,” he said. “And they can make their purchasing decisions accordingly.”

A number of companies announced after Jan. 6 that they would not donate to politicians who spread Trump’s election lie or would pause donating to political campaigns entirely. This raised alarm in Republican committees since Trump and many of his supporters were continuing to push his falsehoods and making them a litmus test for other Republicans.

There is already backsliding by some corporations as Republicans try to make the MAGA Insurrection on January 6 disappear down the memory hole. Large Corporations Are Already Breaking Pledges to Not Donate to Republicans:

On Monday, Popular Information reported that AT&T, Intel and Cigna appear to have already broken their pledges. In January, AT&T and Intel had vowed to suspend donations to the Republicans who voted against certifying the Electoral College vote, while Cigna said they would stop giving to those who “hindered the peaceful transition of power.”

New Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show, Judd Legum of Popular Information reports, that it took roughly a month for the corporations to go back to making political donations to Republicans.

These corporations need to be called out and to be held accountable for supporting the anti-democratic Sedition Party which sought to overthrow American democracy and to impose GQP authoritarianism, i.e., American fascism, under a tinpot dictator, Donald Trump.

Kirschner, who spent six years as an Army lawyer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps followed by 24 years as prosecutor in the District of Columbia’s U.S. attorney’s office, said he doesn’t see declaring support for basic democratic values like accepting the results of an election as partisan.

As to what would constitute spreading conspiracy theories: having signed onto the lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that tried to overturn the election by claiming fraud in other states would be a good qualifier, Kirschner said. A total of 18 state attorneys general and 126 Republican lawmakers supported that effort. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz even volunteered to argue the case before the U.S. Supreme Court, which, in the end, summarily rejected it instead.

Even more GOP members of Congress [147] voted, just hours after their lives had been put in danger by Trump’s violent mob, to reject the Electoral College vote tally showing that Biden had won. But Kirschner said that vote, by itself, would not consign someone to the anti-democracy list. Members of Congress had made similar arguments in previous elections, and it would be unfair to punish the 147 Republicans who did the same this time, he added.

I beg to disagree. Taken in context, this was a violent armed seditious insurrection on the Capitol by MAGA/QAnon cult members and domestic terrorist organizations to interfere with the process of certifying the Electoral College vote, a felony 18 U.S. Code § 2384 – Seditious conspiracy, which sought to overthrow American democracy and to impose GQP authoritarianism, i.e., American fascism, under a tinpot dictator, Donald Trump. There is no comparable historical precedent, not even the election of 1860. The Confederate States seceded from the Union separate and apart from the certification of the Electoral College vote making Abraham Lincoln president.

Kirschner said he could also understand a company wanting to add its own language into the pledge to clarify statements to their satisfaction. “We’re not trying to be jerks about it,” he said. “Let’s not make the perfect the enemy of the good.”

Supporting Trump himself now, though, is another matter, Kirschner said. “You can’t support Donald Trump and argue that you are in favor of free and fair elections. … If you’re supporting him, you’re just not supporting democracy.”

Truer words were never spoken.

As I previously posted:

It’s time for Arizona’s largest corporations to step up once again and to make it known that they do not support these Jim Crow voter suppression laws in the state of Arizona, and will not contribute to the campaigns of any Republicans pursuing these malicious voter suppression bills. The 50 biggest companies in Arizona. Pressure these corporations to do right by the citizens of Arizona [and to take the “Democracy Pledge”]. Silence is consent, and they must take affirmative public opposition to these Jim Crow voter suppression bills.

Threats of boycotts, sit-ins at legislative offices, marches and protests, and  emails, letters and phone calls to pressure legislators and their corporate campaign donors are in order. Super Bowl LVII is currently scheduled for State Farm Stadium in Glendale on February 5, 2023. If Arizona enacts these Jim Crow voter suppression bills, the NFL and NFLPA should pull the Super Bowl from Arizona.

Boycott Arizona for civil rights and voting rights. The Sedition Party and its anti-democratic Jim Crow 2.0 agenda will be responsible for it.

  1. This is what fascism looks like 😉 … those calling for censorship and party loyalty rarely end up on the right side of History, big Blue.

    • Apparently irony is dead … the GQP has gone all in on authoritarian fascism, seizing powers to itself to veto the results of an election if the vote does not go its way. They are trying to “cancel” the rights of minority voters, who tend to vote Democratic, from even being able to cast a vote. They just engaged in a violent armed seditious insurrection to overthrow American democracy on January 6 and to install the most corrupt and criminal president in American history as a tinpot dictator. THAT is what fascism looks like you imbecile.

Corporate accountability is not “censorship.” It is requiring them to behave as good loyal citizens. If they are funding these fascist insurrectionists to overthrow American democracy, they are not good loyal citizens. Do they defend American democracy, or not? Clearly you do not.

      • On Thursday night, Proud Boy Tucker Carlson, host of the “White Power Hour” on Fox News, interviewed conservative talk show host Jesse Kelly – you remember him, the obnoxious asshole who ran against Gabby Giffords in 2010 and lost, wingnut welfare gave him a job on hate talk radio – and they engaged in a bit of white grievance about how life is so hard for us white guys:

Carlson said: “Why should I be a good citizen if they don’t have to follow the rules. I mean, things kind of break down at some point, don’t they?”

Kelly replied: “They will break down. They’re breaking down, Tucker.” “I have said this before and I’m telling you I’m worried that I’m right. The right is going to pick a fascist within 10 to 20 years…” [sorry fool, they already did that in 2016 with Donald Trump].

At that point Carlson nodded and quietly added: “Right, that’s right,” before Kelly added that the U.S. has “60, 70 million of us. We’re not a tiny minority, and if we’re going to be all treated like criminals and all subject to every single law, while antifa, Black Lives Matter guys go free and Hunter Biden goes free, then the right’s going to take drastic measures.”
