Lawrence O'Donnell nailed it on Tuesday night: "My view is very simple here. The Republicans and Mitt Romney have made the cold calculation that they may win with 50.1 percent of the vote [the Karl Rove formula], but they want 100 percent of the racist vote in America. They don't want a single racist to stay home. So they got the pied piper of American racism, and that is now Donald Trump, to do his tune about hatred of the president and the birth certificate."

Donald Trump is the Romney campaign's designated race-baiter for the long-standing GOP Southern strategy of exploiting white Americans' racial prejudices and fears.
The question is whether the feckless corporate media villagers will allow Romney to continue to get away with bullshit excuses about how he can't control what his supporters do and say (Trump is not just a supporter, he is a campaign surrogate and fundraiser), or take him to task for his embrace of nativist and racist Birtherism and going all in on the GOP Southern strategy of dividing the nation by race.
In case there was any doubt that Romney’s embrace of Donald Trump was a nod to birthers, Romney released his birth certificate just minutes before a joint appearance with the Birther King in Las Vegas last night. Romney is not entitled to any benefit of the doubt on this racist Southern strategy.
