The Primary Election is over. Based upon unofficial results (subject to revision), statewide voter turnout was a pathetic 23.01%. The highest voter turnout was in sparsely populated Greenlee County at 42.13%. The worst performance for voter turnout was in Yuma County at 18.03%. The state of Maricopa was not much better at only 20.37%.
Elsewhere in Baja Arizona, Pima County voter turnout was 30.97%, topped only by the far less populated Graham County at 31.32%. Cochise County was only slightly better than the statewide voter turnout, at 23.92%, followed by Santa Cruz County at 20.69%, and Pinal County competing with Yuma County for the bottom, at 19.18%.
There were a number of write-in candidates for various races who did not appear on the ballot or in reported election results. We will not know if any of these write-in candidates received enough votes to qualify for the November ballot until the primary election vote is certified. In the meantime, I will include their names with the write-in designation.

It’s news to me that I won the Americans Elect primary. Are you assuming that all the write-in candidates in districts where there are write-in votes actually won the nomination of the Green, Libertarian and Americans Elect primaries? Right now, unless you have access to some results I don’t online, I see only the number of write-in votes tallied. There are 55 in my primary, but how many of them are for me? After all, there are 361 votes in the Americans Elect primary for Corporation Commissioner, and as in every race but mine for this new party, there are no registered write-in candidates. These votes cast will disappear when the official results come in.
When I say “disappear,” this is what I mean: In the 2010 U.S. House – District 6 Green Party primary, the unofficial count shows 46 write-in votes. Two weeks later, the official count lists only 6 votes for me. The other 40 votes don’t appear, not even as invalid or spoiled ballots.
If people think that if they write in, say, “Mickey Mouse,” “Jeff Flake,” or “Richard Carmona” for U.S. Senate in the Americans Elect primary, it may count for something like a message, it won’t. Those votes just disappear. (Unlike the votes in the New Hampshire presidential primaries, where they counted Obama’s Republican primary write-in votes and Ron Paul’s Democratic write-ins.)
In any case, I assume I won’t know if I won the primary till about September 11 or so, when the official results are finally in. (Last time it was a subpoena in a lawsuit that let me know I’d won.)
