The first American Pope, Pope Leo XIV stepped onto that balcony and spoke to the world—not just to one country, not just in one language. Italian. Spanish. A message of peace that transcended borders and politics. It was beautiful. And meaningful.
And then came the far-right outrage machine: “Why didn’t he speak English?!”
Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because this is the Catholic Church, not Texas Roadhouse. The Sermon on the Mount didn’t come with a Lee Greenwood soundtrack. And maybe—just maybe—the U.S. isn’t the center of the universe.
But sure. Let’s rage because he didn’t pander to the ‘America First’ crowd on day one. Oh nooo! Grab the flag and your emotional support bald eagle.
Imagine being annoyed because the new Pope didn’t speak English…while he stood in Vatican City, addressing 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.
If the fact that the Pope didn’t speak ‘Amurrrican’ feels like a snub, the problem isn’t the Pope.
Did you really expect the Vicar of Christ to tailor his first words to appease your insecure nationalism? You’ve mistaken a religious figure for a political surrogate. And that, my dear, is why you’re definitely in a cult.
God speaks all languages. The Pope speaks five languages fluently and reads two more. Jesus of Nazareth likely spoke three languages: Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek. And ‘real Americans’? Some can barely speak one.

Thanks for bringing this nonissue to our attention.
Bless your heart, Senator. Glad we agree it shouldn’t have been an issue. Maybe next time, direct that memo to the MAGA base?
I would but I cannot find any who are saying that.
Oh no, don’t strain yourself, Senator. I’d hate for you to have to type ‘Pope didn’t speak English’ into a search bar and be overwhelmed by actual evidence.
@ Sen. Kavanagh –
Him ticking off MAGA types is a good thing.
Make him being from Chicago and not being a Cubs fan, just gravy.
I’m not even religious, yet I’m OK with him becoming Pope.
Lemme’ get this straight, JGCK, your comment is that this is a non-issue and therefore not worthy of being commented on, and yet you commented on it!
OMG! Totally Zen! Really more of a koan than a comment! Brilliant!
I take back everything I’ve ever said about you being an idiot! 🙂
My guess is that he’s not an idiot.
He may just believe that everyone who disagrees with him is one.
Which may be (more than a little) idiotic itself.
I think it is absolutely priceless that he is Black! How wonderfully delicious.
Thumbs up, and I’m a protestant!
