The right-wing goes insane over gun regulation

Have you heard about this? The mighty Wurlitzer of right-wing conspiracy theories now has the "Sandy Hook Truthers" who claim that there was no massacre of first graders and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, that it was all an Obama plot to gin up public support for "the guvmint comin' to take your guns!" I kid you not. Do a search for Sandy Hook Elementary on YouTube, and you will be revulsed by what these vile motherf#%kers are posting online. John Aravosis at Americablog.com reports, Sandy Hook truthers claim the Newtown massacre never happened.

And then there is this: Sandy Hook 'truthers' accused of harassing man who took in kids:

A retired psychologist who sheltered six frightened children fleeing
the school shooting in Newtown last month says he's being harassed by
"truthers" who believe the massacre may have been a hoax.

Gene
Rosen says he and his wife, Marilyn, are worried about their safety. He
told Salon he has consulted with a retired state police office and plans
to contact the FBI as well.

His story and his appearances in television interviews have made him a
target of people who question the veracity of the official accounts of
the Newtown massacre.

Numerous blogs and videos posted online have
suggested Rosen was lying or "acting" when he described what transpired
that day. At least one video declares him an outright "fraud."

It's all part of a movement loosely dubbed "Sandy Hook truthers."

Among those who have questioned the official version of the Sandy Hook shootings are a Florida university professor, several bloggers and even a television journalist.

Rosen told Salon the amount of negative feedback has been "overwhelming." This man helped save six children, is now getting harassed for it:

"There
must be some way to morally shame these people, because there were 20
dead children lying an eighth of a mile from my window all night long,"
he told Salon. "And I sat there with my wife, because they couldn’t take
the bodies out that night so the medical examiner could come. And I
thought of an expression, that this 'adds insult to injury,' but that’s a
stupid expression, because this is not an injury, this is an
abomination."

GOPropagandist Matt Drudge tweeted this bit of unhinged insanity this morning.

And the NRA decided that the President's daughters are fair game in their fear mongering campaign against gun regulations. NRA Unleashes The Hounds As Gun Control Fight Gets Real:

[On Tuesday] the NRA essentially declared war on the president. The group released a a tough TV ad
that calls Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for having daughters with armed
guards while he expresses skepticism at the NRA’s call for armed police
in every American public school.

As if to drive home the message of the spot, the NRA debuted it as part of its “Stand And Fight” campaign. The White House declined to comment on the NRA ad.

[Update: White House press secretary Jay Carney responds to the ad:

Most Americans agree that a president’s children should
not be used as pawns in a political fight. But to go so far as to make
the safety of the President’s children the subject of an attack ad is
repugnant and cowardly.]

Meanwhile, Politico reported Tuesday
that the NRA is releasing its DC lobbying brigade onto Capitol Hill
after keeping them “on lockdown in the first month after the Newtown
massacre.”

Gun rights proponents have been fired up
ever since Biden’s task force started up. And conservatives on Capitol
Hill have already dialed the rhetoric up to 11 when it comes to Obama,
suggesting Obama could be impeached
if he makes good on his promise to use executive orders to further his
violence prevention goals. But the NRA’s full-scale reemergence onto the
scene signaled a new chapter in the post-Newtown political story, one
likely to be full of personal attacks like the one in the NRA TV spot.

The NRA likes to focus on the need to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. I could not agree more. The gun worshipers and fetishists who are engaging in this insane behavior should not possess guns and should be under psychiatric evaluation. The NRA and the "gun culture" of gun worshipers and fetishists that it fosters are making the case for the need for gun regulations.

“At some point the NRA’s Washington lobbyists may realize that this kind
of thing is making them irrelevant,” Mark Glaze, director of Mayors
Against Illegal Guns, told TPM on Tuesday night. “It does nothing but
offend the reasonable people who make up the bulk of their country – and
the bulk of their own membership.”

It's time to stop the insanity.
